| Donating YT 10K Club Member | Oh wow...scarey. The quarantine is usually at your home. Unfortunately since they do not have the raccoon to test...it's likely you'll need rabies injections too.

| Unfortunately, that's one of the drawbacks from living in the country. What a sad story.....can't wait to hear updates on little AJ and your kitty-baby.

| How awful! As other posters have mentioned, the possibility of a secondary infection is strong. My sister's cat was attacked by something, needed a rabies booster and got an infection. The vet had to clean it out by sedating the cat and put a drain in the site. It took 3 rounds of antibiotics before it healed. I hope your pup and kitty are OK.

| If he needs to be quarantined , it is usually in your home, not at a animal facility. They don't like taking chances of keeping a "possible" rabid animal near other animals that are there for treatment. I hope all turns out well for you Carol Last edited by Jemma; 05-11-2009 at 01:05 PM. |

| Well, the good news is that 1) AJ is back home from the vet. They gave him boosters (even though he had another year on his rabies shots), and they cleaned out the puncture wound (drained and washed it out), and gave him some antibiotics. He is much quieter and calmer than usual, but I'm sure he will be just fine. and 2) Mina was not home when I got back from work, but after calling her (whistling actually, it works, sometimes just saying 'Shrimp' does the trick. At first, nothing. but after about 40 minutes I saw her and was able to coax her back out and brought her home. The first thing she did: catbox (it must have been a looooooooong night for her) Other than being kind of spookedy, she is fine. Wet nose, no fever, and I could not find any kind of bite or scratch on her, but I'm going to keep a close watch on her in the coming days. Any sign, and I'll take her to the vet too. The bill for AJ: $100. I have to keep him away from other animals for 45 days. But that is at home, and I can handle that. I am so relieved! (and suddenly very tired)... I feel as if I could nap now, but I know if I go to sleep now I will be up in the middle of the night tonight and then my work/wake schedule will be all messed up. Anyway, here are some pics I took a few minutes ago of my little family: |

| So glad A.J is ok and that you get to keep him at home. Also very happy that you found your kitty. I hope you can get animal control or someone to come out and catch that nasty racoon. Hopefully A.J. will back to his normal self very soon. He probably got really scared. Hugs A.J. And hopefully mommy will get some sleep tonight.

| Thank heavens! And I am so glad you found your cat. I have two Siamese myself. Did you see the poster that mentioned you should contact your doctor? We were all so worried about AJ, we forgot that rabies can be spread by saliva and you might have been exposed, too. |

| Be very careful... Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. If their is saliva on your dog and you touch it and then touch your eye, nose, mouth, broken skin, etc. you could contract it. It doesn't necessarily have to come through a bite wound. Cats have different skin than dogs that causes them to abcess more often in puncture wound situations.

| What a scary story! So glad everyone is ok. I would definitely recommend calling someone to get rid of that raccoon. We had an incidence about a week after getting Ollie, where I turned around in the yard and saw what looked like a huge cat on the roof of our house.. on a closer look, realized it was a coon, and it looked pregnant. It just sat there, not moving. We called someone and he came out immediately and was able to trap the raccoon, thank goodness. I refused to let oliver outside until that thing was gone, and I'm constantly scanning the yard now. They are dangerous creatures.
