Yorkie Talker | Help! He WONT walk out of house! I adopted a 1 yr old intact male yorkie about 2 wks ago. He had been attacked by another dog and was hospitalized for about 3 days. His owners couldnt afford vet care which is how I acquired him. He refuses to walk out of the house but will walk TO THE house. I am using the easy walk harness and nothing, he pulls away and jumps and jerks around. I usually end up picking him up and take him to the end of the block so he can walk back home (which he has no problem with) and do his business. I have left the harness and leash on in the house and he has no problem with it at all. I tried the whole treat leash walking. I dont know what to do, how can I train him to go outside? should i buy a gentle leader head collar? |

have you tried sitting outside the door and trying to coax him out with treats. or just hanging out with him outside the door and feeding him or playing with him. do you have a back door to the house? does he have a problem walking out that door? when you have him outside on a walk is he rushing to get back inside?

| This may sound silly, but maybe he was attacked by the dog as he was leaving his house. Maybe he is scared. Maybe it is some sort of association with what happened to him. Just a thought.

It sounds like he has had a terribly traumatic experience, and it's not surprising that he would be fearful outdoors. Have you talked to his former owner to confirm that this is new behavior? Assuming it is, I would gradually build up to leaving the house. Does he have a park he likes to play at or anything like that? That would be good, first, to get him some exercise, and two, you might get him to start walking to the park. Maybe start a block away from the park like you are doing, and then a block farther away, and so on until you are walking out of your front door. Thor is not scared of the outside, but he is not a fan of the "nightly walk". He likes to know he's going somewhere he likes, or else that he's exploring new territory. Also, just FYI, I volunteer dog walk, and some timid dogs you just have to carry out for a few blocks. Once they get out they are fine, as long as they walk in quiet areas without many distractions. That's one benefit of yorkies, they are very portable. It's not so fun when the anxious dog weighs forty pounds. Will he go for a walk once he's outside, or is he just focused on getting back indoors as fast as possible? Try taking him more than a block away and see what happens. Hope that helps!

Yorkie Talker | I live in a 3 story apt building. I sit on the first step with him and he sit there with me shaking...I pet him and give him treats but when i take a few steps away from that step he looks at me and wont come even for treats. When I carry him to the end of the block he's a bit more confident I guess and he walks in the direction of the building ONLY and sniffs and uses the bathroom but once he's done he races to go home. I have taken him a couple blocks from the building and he's a little apprehensive at first but then he walks no problem in any direction that I lead him in, as soon as I turned the corner to our street he knows and puts up a fight if I want to go to the following corner. He's a smart pup and knows which direction we came in too. Considering he was attacked by another dog he is very in your face with dogs that we meet on my block but that could just be because he's intact . I was thinking about taking him to a dog park but I dont know how he'll interact with loose dogs. I also am beginning clicker training, could that possibly help? Thanks for all your advice by the way. |

He has some issues right now so i would not take him to the dog park, especially since he is new to you AND intact. I would look into getting him neutered soon too which might help.

Yorkie Talker | He's actually getting neutered this week pending blood work of course. I agree that he is scared but what can I do to help him get over that or is time the answer? I actually began looking for positive trainers in my area, but so far no luck. I was about to go to NSAL this past weekend because Cesar Milan was there (LOL) but I think im being calm and assertive |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Clicker training is a good idea. I think his "in your face"-ness may be a defensive mechanism to keep other dogs away. The standard method for calming him around other dogs is to distract and reward - have him do a command like sit, and get a treat while another dog passes by. Don't give him more than he can handle, or he will go into samurai mode and reinforce his fearfulness. For now, I suggest just carrying him a few blocks out so he can go for a walk. Give him some time to get over his fear, since it sounds like he is just getting to know you and your home too. He's got a lot on his plate right now! You can also try going to to parks where there are not many dogs around. I really believe a lot of exercise helps with fearfulness - you don't want your dog to have any extra nervous energy.
