Hi - I'm new

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome! I think one of my biggest questions is whether or not to get two puppies at the same time or not. Anyone with experience/advice on this. We'd like to have two eventually, anyway...just dont know if at the same time is a good idea or not.

Also, any advice on which sex, two of the same or different? Any big personality difference you've noticed. We do not plan to breed.

I'm certainly no expert but judging from my personal experience I prefer males. My Jojo will be five in june and has been nothing but a prince from the day he arrived. I love my Lola too (19 months) but it's a whole different bird....she's more demanding, not very lovey, barks quite a bit, nips at people, and tries to chase cars during her daily walks. She's a pistol and that part of the reason I love her so much but they are totally different.

I have read alot about people mostly wanting girls (don't know why perhaps because they like to dress their yorkie girls more-personally I'm not into the costumes) but I have read many breeder websites who concur with me that the males are preferred.

Don't want to step on anyone's toes as I think it is more god given personality that makes the differences vs. gender.

Hope this helps....don't know if it's wiser to get two of the same gender or mixed. As you know, I have one of each and we just had our first litter of four. Will post photos later. 5 weeks old this thursday and gorgeous. Have 3 girls and 1 boy....interested in possibly purchasing one? Where are you located?

Hi welcome to YT. Whether you get two or one really depends on the time you have to devote to training. Yorkies for the record are hard to potty train. Sometimes taking a good year or more before being trained and sometimes even after that they will still not be 100 percent trained. As far as sex go if you get them young and they will be neutered or spayed (Which I would reccomend) it really will not matter. The biggest factor is personality. You don't want two dominate dogs. You'd want to get one that is a little more submissive to avoid issues later on. Males I think tend to be more clingy and train a little easier then the females. Females in my opinion are more independent and head strong. This is just my opinion and some may not agree. I have five Yorkies by the way (4 females and one male). Also with the male they mark. Now my first Yorkie (male) never marked in the house - only outside. He was neutered at 6 months. My male I have now also neutered at 6 months will occassionally mark in the house. It really depends I guess on the dog, but males by nature will lift their leg. I know you did not ask but one thing I would reccomend is getting a bigger size Yorkie (teapot they sometimes call them) one maybe above the average 7 lbs. With twins age 5 yrs. old they will be a little sturdier and better for them to play with. A nice adult size is 10 - 12 lbs. with kids. My first was 13 lbs. and he was great with my two youngs sons. Great advice Elaine....I have three children who were 5,7, and 9 when we got our first Yorkie (almost 5 years ago) and we added our second last year. I have found that the "bigger" 7 lbs and over can really keep up with kids. My kids are great about walking our two daily and my daugher who is now 14 can actually run with Lola. The little ones are definitely not as resilient and require much more care upfront and in the future.

I concur with Elaine. My personal opinion has been that females in general tend to make better pets (this opinion has been formed by various pets I've had over the years), but after reading Elaine's post I think she's right, but of course it also depends on the pet's individual personality.

My wife and I have two girls that are less than six months old (they're about six weeks apart in age). We got Coco six weeks later than Gracie. Coco's a lovey-dove, whereas Gracie is more "independent", or shall I say, SHE decides when she wants hugs and kisses.

The potty training does take time and patience (with a couple of small children I would imagine even more so). Our two still aren't 100% reliable; I wish that one would learn GOOD habits from the other, but I'm afraid the reverse is true.

Gracie & Coco scrap, and at first it concerned us a little, I realized they're establishing dominance, but sometimes it sounded a little ugly, they're terriers, no blood no foul. You'll find posts on here regarding what to do for that (basically just keep an eye on them).

We didn't go male & female simply because of the marking/going into heat dynamic.

In short, everyone has an opinion, but we love our Gracie and Coco so much it hurts. I would recommend that whatever you decide, take your time, and make sure you let your two prospective pups spend some quality time together to test for compatibility before you make your final decision.
