| ![]() I have found if you run after them they think it is a game. With Pepper I yell come and head back to the door of the house. I turn around and he will be right there behind me. ![]()

| ![]() Piper has a big problem with the come command. She acts like she's afraid and wants to get away. I can't figure it out. I never yell at her, I try not to grab for her. The only way I can get her to come is if I kneel down on the floor even with her, she knows I have a treat, make eye contact, tell her to sit, which she does quite well, coax her to come and when she does I give the treat, wait a few seconds then pick her up if it is time to go out. Once she is in my arms, she is all lovey, dovey with lots of kisses. I think it's all a big game for her. It's very annoying and dangerous for her if she doesn't learn to come when call.

| ![]() I personally think the "sit-stay" command is just as important, if not more important, as the "come" command. You should be able to put your dog in the "sit-stay" position...and it should stay in that position until you say it's okay to come, that is when you show extreme affection and offer a special treat. It could very well save your dogs life, there are some instances, especially where traffic is concerned, that simply having your dog "sit-stay" until you can retrieve it, is far safer then having them come to you, weaving through traffic. Practice, practice and then again more practice. It's worth the time and effort.

| ![]() I've found with Sophie that I have to use a harsh voice to get to stay. She won't come, but I've managed to get by with the Stay so that I can pick her up. I don't have to yell, just use an angry sounding voice, that gets the point across. I still praise her once I've picked her up. |
