I personally think the "sit-stay" command is just as important, if not more important, as the "come" command. You should be able to put your dog in the "sit-stay" position...and it should stay in that position until you say it's okay to come, that is when you show extreme affection and offer a special treat. It could very well save your dogs life, there are some instances, especially where traffic is concerned, that simply having your dog "sit-stay" until you can retrieve it, is far safer then having them come to you, weaving through traffic. Practice, practice and then again more practice. It's worth the time and effort.
