Luxating Patella: A Knee Problem in Dogs Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc Which dogs are at risk of having a luxated patella? http://a1272.g.akamai.net/7/1272/112...aired_dach.jpgSmaller breeds of dogs, especially Miniature and Toy Poodles, have the highest incidence of patella luxation. Genetics can play a role. In certain breeds that have extremely short legs such as the Basset Hound or Dachshund, patellar luxation is thought to be secondary to the abnormal shape of the femur and tibia. The curvatures of the bones in these breeds work in conjunction with the forces of the quadriceps muscles to displace the patella to the inside. Please do not misunderstand – not all members of these breeds are affected with patellar luxation, only a small portion. |

oh boy, reading all this stuff about knees is so scary. My Jemma is 5 months and she has a roach back. But she runs like the devil, with no problems....so far. Does a roach back automatically mean they will get bad knees? |

It doesn't say it here: What are the symptoms? Most dogs are middle-aged, with a history of intermittent (on-again-off-again) lameness in the affected rear leg(s). An affected dog commonly stops and cries out in pain as he is running. The affected leg will be extended rearward, and for a while, the dog is unable to flex it back into the normal position. |

Yorkies are ranked #4 by the Orthopedic Foundation of America in number of cases of luxating patellas. Your best chance of getting one without LP is to get a puppy from a reputable breeder who has both parents checked for LP's and knows her lines to be free of them generations back. You also have to make sure they don't jump on and off furniture as LP's can also be caused by traumatic injury. Here's some information from the OFA: OFA: Patellar Luxation Information |

[quote=Ladymom;2581917]She certainly fits my definition of a backyard breeder. Remember, you don't literally have to keep your dogs in your backyard to be a BYB. Breeding pet quality dogs with no knowledge of genetics and no health screening makes a backyard breeder. Here are a couple of good links: Lawrence County Humane Society Abuse and Adoption Center I just went thru my emails going back and forth with the breeder and I copied this word for word from one email that she sent to me: then i mentioned to you that my aunt had a female gorgeous and breeding quality and both her parents little bigger than my litter and they produce puppies on the 6.0 pounds range. We discussed all this.....I would have paid more money for better quality but I thought I was getting great quality at a discount because of the economy and because she had no expense for the litter because it was her stud....UGGGH! |
She is the cutest thing! My Adie's ears were standing up already by the time she was 4 o 5 weeks old and I have seen some HUGE ears on yorkies. I thing you have yourself a pretty little girl yorkie. don't worry about it! |

She is the sweetest thing.....thanks!!!! |
How do I find your photo album? Can't find it. |
Looks like a Yorkie to me. Chihuahua, I don't see it from this photo and certainly don't look like a mix at this point. Yorkies go threw so many weird changes. You don't know what you got until at least eight months and even then they change so much. You really need to have some confidence in you breeder. Hope you did your homework. |

Coming from someone who has a mutt :p I'm sure you're blah, but nevertheless happy they are healthy...I'll take a fully developed puppy any day over a poor puppy mill baby with underdeveloped organs...sorry dont mean to be gloomy...but this weekend all i heard was "wow, Daisy is "special" looking...a face only a mother could love...After i gave my family the vulgar finger, I looked at her and saw a beautiful long legged healthy freakish puppy...she's all mine! Your babies are adorable!! |

Thank you!, You're absolutely right...I'm sorry it it doesn't feel good to wonder... I believe Ksena and Daisy share the same ears! Daisy is a Morkie, Maltese and a Yorkie...I had my doubts...thought she was Yorkie and Chihuahua, but the breeder was real sweet and sent me pics of the mom and pops, she just happens to take after her dad more than maltese mother! |

Daisy though has lost her Yorkie coloring...she's now overall reddish blond, and her roots dont appear to be coming in dark anymore. Thanks Ladymom! I learned something new! Hey Maybe Ksena is the same deal!:p minus the maltese lol |
