| Advice for buying online?? Hi, I am new to Yorkie Talk. My sister has an adorable yorkie and she suggested I post on here. I am in the process of looking to buy a yorkie poo; however, I am having a hard time finding a breeder in my area. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with buying a puppy online. I have found some puppies online that can be shipped but I have heard this is not good for the puppy. Is having a puppy shipped harmful to them? Also, I have also heard there are a lot of scams out there. Does anyone know how I can protect myself from a scam if I do buy online? Thanks and any advice is appreciated! Nikki |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Since joining YT, I've seen a lot of sad stories about people who bought online. You are correct that there are a lot of scams out there. There was also a very ugly disagreement about returning a dog whose temperment did not fit in the with the new family. I would suggest doing everything you can to buy from someone local, even if it means a long drive. You should at least visit the breeder's home, meet the parents and select your puppy in person. I personally don't believe puppies should be shipped, but if it's a very long drive, maybe you can have the puppy shipped to you at that point. This is a huge purchase and commitment, so it is worth going the extra mile up front. Good luck!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk, don't get me wrong, I loved mixed breeds and most of the dogs, I had before have been mixed breeds, I'm just against breeding for them. The reason people breed purebreds, is that they are better able to predict what the adult dogs will look like and how he/she will behave. When you mix a breed, you don't know what you're going to get, and can't predict anything. Because of this, many people are dissatisfied with the adult dog, and pounds and rescues are loaded with mixed breeds, that are adorable, but just not what someone had in mind. You can get puppies and adults, dogs over 1 year old are often housebroken, and you will know what they will look like as an adult, so there is no gamble. If looks and behavior are important to you please consider a rescue or shelter. Remember when a breeder is mixing, they are often mixing dogs that don't meet the standard very will, so they may be a very poor examples of each breed, and again, it's a crap shoot on what the results will be. Please make sure if you support a breeder such as this, you will be happy no matter how the dog turns out. Concerning buyer over the internet, many people stopped supporting pet stores who sold puppies because most of them came from puppy mills, the millers had to turn elsewhere and now sell from the internet. You cannot easily distinguish a puppy miller from a good breeder, although good breeders have websites, they don't sell over the site, they want to have a connection with you, and interview you, to make sure you can provide a good home. To ensure you are not supporting a miller, you need to see for yourself how the dogs are being raised. If you are not familiar with puppy mills I urge you to do a google and see for yourself how millions of dogs are living in torture. Buying a dog should not be an impulse decision, you will have this member of the family for around 15 years if you're lucky, and you want a pet that meshes with you family and lifestyle. Good luck in your search!

| thank you! thank you all for your posts! Another concern for me ordering online is that I am getting a dog from a puppy mill which I certainly do not want to support. For a long time I have been looking at the SPCAs in my area but have not had any luck finding a small dog (I was open to any small breed). The small dogs go fast and b/c I will be a first time dog owner without a yard some wont even consider me. thanks msjagg...if you see any in the area please let me know and I will do the same! I know they raided a puppy mill with yorkies recently but so many people put in applications and they are now gone. Ordering online is my LAST option but I am starting to worry it is my only option! thanks again : ) |

| Are you willing to travel some? If so consider looking at the classified section of YT, there breeders and rescuers list pups. I agree with Nancy. Look at the ASPCA's website on puppymillers. I seen a video on one of the news channels before (can't recall which one), they showed very impressive webpages for puppies for sale, but when they went to the house to pick up the puppy it was horrific to say the least. Over and over again it happens, people are getting scammed out of money. Please, reconsider doing on line as I'd hate to hear that someone stole your puppy money or your puppy arrived in ill shape. Best to see for yourself.
