| picky/fussy eater..what do you mean? I see a lot of people talking about picky/fussy eaters...Does that mean if your yorkie doesn't eat their food, right away, you switch, or what? Apple sometimes doesn't eat all day, but then, eventually, she will eat ...Now I can tell you when I switched her from Eukanuba to Innova, she would, totally, hurry up and pick out all the Innova and leave the Eukanuba...Now, after a couple of weeks, she doesn't seem so enthralled w/it, but I just "wait her out", and she eats it, even if it's late, late, in the evening...Sometimes, if it has been quite a while, since she eaten, I will give her a few blueberries, or leaves of spinach, but she always comes around...Is it not good to let them go all day w/o eating? | Small, young pups can't go all day without eating. Older dogs may be able to. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days to get them to eat their food and some start throwing up bile because of it. Not healthy... It is said that a dog will never allow itself to die of starvation but if they are throwing up bile, they aren't at their healthiest, so waiting them out for too long isn't a good idea in my opinion. Then you have the issue of if they don't eat all day they don't like their food and a dog should enjoy their food, so some people will switch it for them...

| bile? is she throwing up. She must be doing ok if she's 5 months and 3.5 pounds. That's a decent weight at that age. As I said my Jemma is 5 months and 3 pounds and she eats a full 1/2 cup a day, every day. What is the total, in your opinion, that she eats a day? Last edited by Jemma; 04-09-2009 at 05:14 AM. |

| Thanks Ellie...Oh no, if she went over 24 hrs. w/o eating, she'd be toot- sweet at the vet for answers...I've also noticed, if she hasn't eaten, about 15 or 20 minutes of playing ball will get her to the food bowl for a few bites....Which, btw, brings to mind, that she is on Innova Puppy, and I don't know if it's my imagination, but she sure seems like it's more of an effort to chew those tiny little pieces up, but she does...Sometimes, I think about adding warm water to soften it up, but then I think I might be opening a can of worms, and that she won't eat it unless I do that, and she's always been free fed, since birth.... | My Great Pyrenees is a very picky eater (wouldn't think it because he's a large dog, huh?) so, I use to change his food very often, but have found that if I mix in a half a can of dog food with his dry, he will eat it right up. He has been on the same food for about 8 months now. I'd recommend trying that. And I agree, it's never a good idea to wait it out with them. If they don't like their food they may find something else in your house to put in their empty stomach and that could cause blockage issues or surgery to remove it. If you're free feeding (leaving food down all the time for her) try putting her on a schedule two or three times a day. This way feeding time is looked forward to and exciting. If she knows a trick, have her do it so food is then placed down as a reward. Then whatever she hasn't eaten within 20 mins pick it up and give it to her on the next scheduled feeding time. Does that make sense? Hope so. PS: Apple's adorable!!!

| Jemma WAS on Blue Holistic with Lifesource bits. She refuses to eat the Lifesource bits. But she LOVES the food but the lifesource bits always remain in the bowl. I have now added Natures Recipe Farm Stand Selects. I don't think it's the greatest dog food, just adding a bit of a stimulate to her diet. 1/3 cup or 1/4 cup total for a day is not a lot. But she is 3.5 oz and weighs more than mine who eats a 1/2 cup total a day. She's healthy right and no vomiting? Has she just started being kinda finicky or is this the way it's always been for her? |

| No idea on the weight. Ellie is my first Yorkie and I didn't pay attention to how fast and how much she gained in puppyhood. She ate Iams at that age and then went to Science Diet as an adult. Not recommending either. I'd probably choose Innova also.

| Jemma, I think she's always been this way...she just doesn't eat much...When she was on Eukanuba, she was this way, and when I changed to Innova, she went nuts for it (as I've already mentioned lol)...But after reading what you have written about vomiting, not eating for 2 or 3 days, etc., I think she's o.k...I think the half and half on dry/wet food is a great idea, but I worry about her getting fat...Not that fat is bad, but she has the tiniest little thin legs, and that freaks me out, thinking about her carrying any extra weight...She seemed to have had a growth spurt (in height) between 4 and 5 months, and her little legs seem so spindly (is that a word?) In fact, it looks like she grew right out of her hair, and left the legs below...She used to be a little bundle of fur, from top to bottom, now she's a little bundle of fur, w/4 little skinny legs below the bundle...I think she grew taller, before her leg hair had time to grow out.... | As Ellie stated Science Diet and Iams, nooooooo. When buying food, try and stay away from anything that say's corn or corn glueten. Just fillers and not good for any dog. Even though I'm not crazy on Nature's receipe, I made sure their is no corn. And that if there are grains, that they are good, healthy and easily digestable grains. It's what I liked about Blue the most. First ingredients in the dog food label is what the food contains the most. If you see any grains first, before any meat, turn and run. IMO, if it ain't broe don't fix it. Meaning that if your pup was always this way and is healthy, weight is good, don't do anything. I agree this is a awkward growing stage for them. Yup Jemma has little skinny legs now too. 3.5 pounds isn't heavy for a puppy. Look here: If your puupy is 20 weeks and is 56 oz, if she stays with the growth chart she should be 4.5 to 5 pounds. Actually, Jemma is 2 weeks shy of 5months. I am going to weigh her right not, even though she ate already. lol Ok, Jemma is 18 week, 3 days and weighs 3 pounds 3 oz. Your pup is 20 weeks and 3 pounds 8 oz. Truthfull, I don't much care if Jemma is 10 pounds. Only if that's the weight she should be and not because she is being over fed, which she isn't. Plus Jemma is a Shorkie. But Jemma's weight is after her Daddy Yorkie. But remember, Growth Charts are only guidelines...not a definite. Sounds to me that your baby is just fine. So sit back, relax and just enjoy her. |

| Maggie, Bonnie does not get too excited about her dry kibble. I work during the day and I want to make sure she has something in her stomach before I go to work. I get one of those small Wellness canned food, and give her a small little scoop every morning, then leave out the dry for her. That way I know she has eaten something. One of those little cans will last for days. Somedays she will eat very little, the next day she might make up for it and eat more. (just like us. LOL) |
