| Yorkies and Hawks I always take Tucker out with a harness and a leash. He weighs 3.7 lbs. We were going to be gone all day on Saturday. A friend of mine offered to keep him. I put his harness on , and gave her the leash when she picked him up. They let him run around without the leash in their back yard. They have two hawks that hang around . I know they meant well, and just wanted him to have fun. The husband said the hawks would not come around with them standing in the back yard. I know hawks can swoop down , and grab something in a split second. My question is this: how much does the dog need to weigh before the hawks and other predators won't pick them up. It really scared me when they told me about it. |

| Hawks can pick up big rabbits so if you have problems with hawks being around I would never let him off leash and I would stay right with him. Too many yorkies have been taken away by hawks and other big birds.

| I would not let them off the leash especially with the hawks around. Better safe than sorry... JMO

| For a hawk to swoop down and pick up a pup, it usually has to be 4 lbs or under. Hope this helps. Your baby is in that weight group, so, he woudn't be out without a leash on if he were mine! |

| In my old country house we had hawks and they would routinely swoop and grab rabbits from our yard, once with me standing in close proximity. One grabbed a fairly large rabbit as well once with us standing in the sliding glass doors watching. He could hardly get lift off and dragged this poor rabbit for about four hundred feet before he finally got the strenght to get off the ground. My Mia will never be off leash after witnessing that!

Thor's Human Donating Member | I think there's an article in the top forum about a ten pounder who got snatched by an owl. Fortunately she was too heavy and the owl gave up, but sometimes predators have eyes bigger than their stomachs.

| There were 8 hawks circling the sky over my work parking lot! 8!!!! Thats more than Ive EVER seen at one time! Thankfully I don't see them where I live, often if at all. Sometimes at boyfriends house I see them, but my boys are 9lbs and about 5.5lbs... so possibly a bit big. I keep a close eye out and if I see hawks in the sky I don't let them out until they go away.

| Thanks you guys so much. I guess I've lost a good baby sitter, but my friend's husband can be pretty stubborn. I really like the guy, but he thinks he knows everything. (If you know what I mean). That was the first time anyone had kept him. I have a housekeeper who kept my Malti-Tsu when we went on vacation. We have gone to Europe several times, and she kept him, but he weighed 17lbs. He died at age 17. It took awhile, but she eventually fell in love with Tucker also. She's afraid to keep him, though, because he's so small. She's almost too conscientious. I know he would be fine with her. I'm having to cancel a trip to Ponte Vedra, Fla. My husband and I werwere going to the golf tournament there. I thought she would offer to keep him, but she hasn't. He would be in a hotel room alone all day if we were to take him. |

| I don't blame you for being protective of your little one! Hawks have been known to go after bigger dogs and they may not be able to fly with them, but the talons digging into the dog can cause grave injury or even death. I have a 5 pounder and 7 pounder and still worry about birds of prey. I haven't seen hawks around here for a couple of years, but it's always on my mind.

| It's a shame to lose a good babysitter. Try doing a search above for the stories regarding hawks and owls. Print them and give them to Mancho Man to read. I remember several stories about members loosing their Yorkies to these birds of prey. One was actually lucky enough to see his Yorkie dropped over a lake and rushed out by boat to save him. The bird dropped him either because he was heavy or it was not a good hold. That story had a happy ending but the other's did not. I can't imagine the horror of seeing your beloved pet being carried into the sky never to be seen again. Horrible. However, if he still dosen't take this seriously no way would he ever see my Yorkie again unless I were there. |

| I've seen the occasional hawks flying over here and I always keep a closer watch on Jackson, however, he's 13 pounds and I don't really think they'd be interested. If anything, he would try to eat THEM, lol.
