Default Any other yorkies eat EVERYTHING? I am afraid Joey is going to choke!!

Ugh - I am so paranoid since Joey's accident (he was stepped on awhile ago, but has fully recovered) - anyway, the little guy picks up everything off the ground! You name it and he loves to play "get away" with it - last night he picked up one of those plastic bread bag closures from our kitchen floor - we ran around after him and finally pried his mouth open...we got half of it out, but the other half he swallowed. My fiance and I are so worried that he is not going to be able to pass this when he goes to the bathroom....it wasn't that big, but still! Will the little guy be ok?

I thought that Rowdy swallowed a paper clip this summer - I'm not sure whether or not he did - but when I called the vet, he said to give him about a 1/2 teaspoon of mineral oil on his food, every time he ate and also to feed him bread. He was 4 1/2 months old at the time. The vet said the paper clip would take 2-3 days to come out and so I didn't check his poop till the second day. I never found the paper clip - but later he swallowed a tiny little rubber band and it came out in about 12 hours - so I may have missed the paper clip or maybe he never swallowed it. Anyway, the vet said to watch him closely for signs of pain so it if was "stuck" he could see him right away.

Rowdy worries me to death too because he grabs everything that drops on the floor and then he runs. Our house looks just like it would if we had a toddler - NOTHING is on the floor.

I am sure he will be fine. Mine used to pick up everythin left on the floor. They made me a nervous wreck but they stopped doing it as they got older.

Mine does that too! Eats everything she can find!
When I worked at a vet clinic they had a doggy that came in dead and they had to do an autopsy, it had swallowed thongs and they got tangled around its intestines.

It really is exasperating. I call it "The Catfish Routine". Searching the bottom and eating anything it finds. It seems to me that anyone with a Yorkie must have a spotless house! Atleast the floors (LOL)! Hope little Joey passes it with no problems.

Yes, Ruby chews on everything she find on the ground. She defenitely runs away with it and is reluctant to give it back.

I swear Tucker hears me drop something, and is there before it hits the floor. And if my son leaves his bedroom door open, forget it, because there are all kinds of treasures on that floor! Today he had a popsicle stick in his mouth and it took forever to get it. He wasn't even chewing it, just walking around with it in his mouth. I guess it tasted good. His favorite treat is paper!

Marty is the same way. He LOVES to chew on things...ANYTHING! We try to watch him carefully and just make sure that there is nothing small enough to fit in his mouth any where that he can reach. Fortunately, he's never swallowed anything that could hurt him...so I don't know what to tell you about the plastic, but I'm sure he'll be okay. If you're really worried about it, you could call the vet just to make sure.

Eats everything........

My little guys, Corky 91/2 years and Wynstn 6 months think that anything that hits the floor is fair game to them. The other day I was bringing my laundry to the basement and one of my knee high nylons fell out of the basket Well Wynstn got it and ran. I chased him and he went behind and under the bed. I panic ed, cos he eats everything. I ran and got some treats trying to lure him. He ran out of the bedroom and into the sewing/computer room. I seen it hanging out of his mouth. I shook the treat container again and he came running and I snatched him up. I pulled at the nylon and realized it was down his throat, and I had to pull it out. I was sooooooooo scared as he could of ate the whole thing!! So I have to watch them all the time.

Rainbow Eat's everything

My Maxie (Maximillian) used to eat everything too. When I first got him he found every cigarette butt and piece of discarded chewing gum that one could find. He was a scamp too. If it hit the ground he was all over it and gone like the wind, you were like "who was that breeze that just blew by here". My sweet boy. Max was only 3 1/2 lbs. and no matter how hard we watched him it wasn't enough. I'm going to tell my story in hopes that some will learn from it, I know I have, I will never forget and maybe one day I will stop blaming myself and be brave enough to have another one. I've wanted a yorkie for as long as I can remember, finally after about 15 years, I got the love of my life. When Max was young he got a tummy ache (so I thought). I took him to the vet who said Max just had a sensative tummy. He advised to take him off food, gave him some pills and to put him on the rice and chicken diet. Every so often this would happen and I just assumed Max had eaten some food that the kids had dropped. He would throw up for about 2 or 3 days and then be as fiesty as ever. Weekend before last, all was good, Max was great, went every where I did, played like normal. That Sunday night he started throwing up again. I figured we were back to the same o same o. I was wrong. Monday he refused to eat, but was drinking water. Tuesday he was worse. I had never been so scared in my life. He could walk maybe 2 or 3 steps and would just fall over. He became very lethargic. I picked him up and he barfed brown smelly something. I rushed him to the vet. She took an x-ray and was very perplexed. She said she'd never seen anything like it. Max had 3 different somethings going on inside him and she couldn't tell what it was, but assumed he ate something and it was a blockage. She wanted to put him on fluids and flush it out, if that didn't work it was surgery time. At this point Max looked like he was trying to throw up again. The vet turned around and agreed but then suddenly said, "Nope, he's dying". Within 10 minutes he was gone. She said that afterward his body didn't react as it normally should have. After I left she took a look inside of Max and was surprised. Inside his colon she found 13 little rubberbands!!!!!!! She said that no amount of money or surgery would have saved him. Because they had adhered to the colon she believes they were there from that very first time and that he had just been able to overcome it and be normal until this past week. It's been a week and I'd give anything to tell him how sorry I am and to have him back.
