| Stewie just swallowed my pearl earring!!! It fell out of my ear and he had it in his mouth before I could pick it up. He promptly swallowed it. He weighs 14 lbs. So he is not tiny, but I am concerned about this passing through his system....what do I do???? |

| I don't blame you for being concerned! I would call the vet for some suggestions at the very least. See what they say and if they want you to bring him in. Good luck! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I always call my vet about everything, and he can tell me exactly what to look for if things go wrong. This hasn't happened to me, but I read of another dog swallowing an earring, and she was told many things including giving a tablespoon of canned pumpkin at each meal. Since he's a little bigger, the intestines will be bigger and it's not as apt to cause a blockage, but you should look for symptoms of an obstruction including vomiting, loss of appetite, and no pooping. This means an obstruction could be present, and you should see a vet immediately. Put his poop in a small baggie over the next few days, and squish it to help in finding your pearl. By the way, don't induce vomiting; this could cause choking. You should be able to find it, some time between 12 hours and 5 days. Good luck!

| Ok thank you all....my first thought was to induce vomitting, but the vet just said no. I am giving him white bread and monitoring his bm's. I will bring him in immediately if anything is not right (just like what one of the posters said). Sorry for the panic...don't know what I would do without this guy. |

| Yup, don't induce vomiting. That shouldn't normally be done with sharp object or with things that burn.

| If it is a real pearl (natural or cultured), his stomach acids will probably dissolve it (that is why you don't clean pearls with white vinegar like the rest of your jewellery...even mild acids dissolve pearls). The stud pin would be the worrisome part, so be watching his poops for that, rather than the pearl itself.
