My yorkies bones sound like they're "cracking" So, I have a 4 month old two pound yorkie. He is very healthy, plays, eats and drinks well and doesn't whine unless he needs to potty. But, it seems like sometimes when I pick him up I hear little creaks and cracks. I'm afraid its his bones. He isn't in any kind of pain that I know of and he is really tiny. I am going to take him to the vet next week but does anyone know if there is any kind of calcium supplements for dogs? I don't know if any of you have ever experienced this, but sometimes when I go to reach something my wrist or my elbow kinda cracks. It doesn't really hurt, just makes a sound. I'm wondering if this is whats happening to Pottsy. Any suggestions???

Have you gotten your puppy checked for luxating patellas / loose knee caps? It may be popping out and back into place when you're picking him up and hearing the sound. It is hereditary but can also happen through trauma. He's still growing so maybe the muscles around his joints will strengthen and hold it in place if the grooves of his knees aren't too shallow. Your vet should be able to check for LP simply with a physical exam as they manipulate the knee cap to grade how easily it slips in and out of place. Have you ever noticed your puppy limping or favouring one or both of his hind legs? They generally don't show any sign of pain until it worsens to the point of requiring surgery. I have been told that when slipping out, it's pretty much painless, but they feel some discomfort when it pops back into place. This popping in and out grinds down the cartilage so the supplements do help, but will not cure the problem. If your guy has a low grade of LP, you may want to try giving him glucosamine and chondroitine. Cosequin seems to be the product of choice. Also, avoid having your little one jump on/off furniture as recommended by the vets for this breed. Some with this condition can live through their entire lives fine. Some take several years before really needing surgery, while others get bad real quick. I hope you'll be able to figure out what is wrong with your little one soon!

The only time he seems to act like he has issues with his legs is when I take him outside to potty. He will sometimes stand on one back leg or one front leg. and he only does it when it's cold so I think the ground is cold to his feet so he is just trying to keep them off the cold grass. Otherwise I never have any problems with him. THanks for the info tho, I appreciate it.
