I was just wondering at what age do you start taking your pups to a groomer? Bailey is 4 1/2 months old and his hair is starting to look unrully, I try to brush him everyday but he hates it.

We started taking our dogs at 4 and 5 months. They really dont have to trim that much at that age but it does take away the shagginess.

How often do they need to be cut, and do you keep them in a puppy cut?

I would say every 3 to 4 months. I dont keep mine in a puppy cut though. I dont like the shaved down look. I just tell the groomer a yorkie cut and they trim the hair on the body down but leave enough on the head that you can still put atopknot if you want to. Its a real cute yorkie cut.

We keep Rowdy in a puppy cut (he's six months old) - about an inch long all over, but if you tell they groomer, they will leave enough on the top of the head for a topknot. I did that time before last, but my hubby doesn't like the topknot deal so this last time to the groomer, I said not to leave so much on top. We love the puppy cut - I can't yet figure out how to resize pix so I can't show you what he looks like, if I figure it out, I'll post one. We think he's pretty cute! We take him to the groomer about every 4-6 weeks.

I do Sweeties grooming. I like the Yorkie look, with full coat, but it can be a lot of work for some people . My sister keeps her Yorkie in a puppy cut. I think she gets her groomed about every four months.
You said your bab is 41/2 months, I think that is a good age to start goings bring a pup in to get used to the new experience, (it can be very scary for then). Make it fun and maybe, just get the feet, ears and under the tail trimmed. And you must like the groomer because its your little Bailey!

If I were you - I'd start now - it's good to get them used to it. I have a cocker who didn't need grooming till she was over a year and she got sent home because she was so scared.

PLUS...(not to scare you) but it's kind of hard to find a good groomer - if you get him trimmed now and they don't do a great job - his puppy hair is still changing and by the time his adult coat comes in - you may find a great groomer by then ! lol - We went to 5 so far....now I do my girls myself

I keep Matise in full coat. In the beginning he hated to be brushed, he would cry

as if I was killing him but I stuck with it. And it paid off, he finally stopped the crying and just sits there and takes it for the most part. He's still a little squirmy every once in awhile but for the most part he sits still. He even lets me comb him while I use the blow dryer after baths. I comb him every 2 days. I only trim the tips of his ears and the bottom of his feet. I also started putting in a topknot the minute I got him(he was 4 months old) and now he sits perfectly still when I do his topknot. I say if you want to keep his hair long then just stick with it and it will get better with time.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, I really love the way Rowdy looks with his puppy cut and will probably do that with Bailey. I think the hair on Bailey's head either needs to be trimmed near his eyes or it just needs to finish growing in because he has hair covering his eyes and he looks silly.

The pix of Rowdy I posted on this thread is one from a couple of weeks ago when the groomer had left his hair long enough on the top to do a topknot. But my hubby didn't like the topknot thing, he thought it was too girly - and so I didn't put it in very often. As a result his hair did flop down over his eyes sometimes and I didn't like that. Rowdy just went to the groomers and now his hair is only about an inch long on top and she cut it real short over his eyes - I know it doesn't look that way in the "smiley" pic, but it is really pretty short on top and very short over his eyes. I like it that way because I can see his pretty eyes better!

You can take your puppy to the groomer as soon as all his vaccines are done .
Earlier the better because they can get use to be groomed faster .
