If you got your yorkie from a breeder how much did you pay?

I paid about $950 for each of mine from different breeders. Both are AKC registered.

I paid $1500 for Sadie (RIP) and $1200 for Ben. At the time I bought them from two different breeders, I also saw some advertised for $600-800. I went with the breeders that raised them in their homes and treated their Yorkies as pets instead of breeding stock.

When you think of the years of pleasure they are going to bring, the price is really not that much of an issue. Besides, that purchase price is only the beginning.....add to that the price of all the supplies, quality food, treats, chewies, toys, beds, blankets, clothes, grooming fees or buy your own hair clippers and blades, trimmers, nail clippers or grinders, combs, brushes, hair dryer, xpen or play yard, crate, carriers, doggy bells, leashes, harnesses, bowls, water bottle & holder, shampoo, conditioner, detangler, ear cleaner, dog toothpaste, toothbrush, pee pads, pet stain remover, pet play pen, pet stroller, safety gates, car seat, doggie diapers or belly bands, misc. health products, dog poo scooper, registration fee, license fee, vet bills which can get expensive for even routine visits and astronomical if there is a crisis ..... I know I am forgetting other important "stuff" but you get the idea.

That purchase price, its only the beginning but .... they are worth every penny!

But, then as you know, you can look at the it from a reputable breeders stand point.

When you start you purchase the best your money can buy. You have them tested, maybe championed, give them the best medical care. All the supplies mentioned above; bedding, crates, grooming supplies for home and those differ from show supplies. If you show, you most likely have two or more of everything, a set for home and a set for the road. Make sure you have all the whelping supplies and meds needed You give the mother all her prebreeding tests, nutritional needs, etc. Puppies are born and hope nothing goes wrong, like a c-section in the middle of the night on a weekend or mother doesn't develop complications after whelping. Then the work continues, making sure mother's nutrional needs are met, puppies are nursing off of all nipples and rotating them around. Changing of the whelping pen linens 2 or 3 times a day. Making sure puppies are gaining and retaining their body heat. Expenses for their first vet check. Expenses for shots, expenses for all required testing for puppies. Once puppies are weaned there special puppy food for puppies. Making sure they are socialized. Taking the time to prescreen potential new families. Making sure that each puppy package is readied for each puppy. Taking time with your new families, making sure their needs are met and all questions are answered. And it's not over when the puppies leave.....you get calls all the time, with more questions. There is more to this list.

I got both of my pets from a petshop but my boy Bingo was 700 and so was his sister the guy said it didnt matter about the sex but i got my Girl in another petshop and she was originally 1200 but i paid 1100 which isnt bad and in the petshops where i got them they had a vet to check them before they left with me which is good so i felt safe about it i think 2000 is way to much i even think 1000 is way to much i read somewhere u can get any type of name brand dog in a shelter as a baby for like 75bucks so i dont know how true this is but there is no shelters here in the bronx i think only in jersey

That is exactly what I mean't with my reply earlier. I think the purchase price is insignificant - almost no matter what it is - if you are getting they puppy you want from a good breeder. The 15 years or so you have with her is so much more. My Sadie is the light of my life. I hope your Sadie was as special to you as mine is to me. (I'm sure she was) When my vet saw my puppy and heard about my breeder he asked if he could refer people to me for her name and phone number. I thought that said a lot.

I think that these are the reasons that I don't think $1,800 is by any means too much to pay for the puppy I got. I have a friend for life in my breeder.

I paid $1500 for madison. worth every penny knowing my breeder had been breeding AKC standard yorkies for 14 years. and keeps them in her home as pets. (madison was 5 mos old when we found her) the breeder was in NO hurry to get rid of her and her sister. She was more interested in placing them in as loving home as she'd been providing.
I paid $2000 for my maltese 5 yrs ago and our breeder also breeds yorkies but she wanted $2500 for a female and I just couldn't pay that price, even though she'd come from champion lines. Scruffy's Toys index

I did find some byb in the calif area that were under $1000 but after talking to them I just didn't feel comfy. I think like others have stated you buy the breeder first. If I didn't have repore or feel comfy with the breeder I'd never pursued their dogs.
