| outside and puppy shot question totally another first timer question right here one thing i've heard that i wanted to ask about.... I have heard that while housebreaking to only go outside to "go potty". We are going to get the pup in spring/summer, does this mean no walks or trips anywhere? my son plays baseball and then soccer into july and i walk almost every day. Can puppy come with for socialization or will he get confused? Will it be ok as long as I stick to the treat when he goes outside even if we are out for "pleasure" and not potty? which makes me think of another question (haha sorry, 1st puppy )... pups shots aren't finished until 12 weeks right? or is it later? and they shouldnt be out before then?? thanks in advance! you guys are awesome and sooooo helpful! |

| the puppy shouldn't go anywhere besides your back yard until they have completed their first series of shots, mine was done at a little over 4 months old. it is hard because we wanted to take him everywhere. We just got our second puppy and he hates to be left alone while I take Sam for a walk but I didn't want to change my routine for Sam just because of Harley. He goes for his 3rd set of shots this morning so it won't be too long before I'll be walking the two of them together.

| You must wait until your puppy has had all his shots plus two weeks for full immunity. Puppies get maternal antibodies from nursing which stay in their bodies for weeks after weaning and they interfere with the early shots. A study of a cross section of different puppies showed that the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection (become immunized) covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks of age, and by 18 weeks, 95% of the puppies were protected by the vaccine. Vaccination Recommendations for Puppies (Puppy Shots) Unless your backyard is fenced in, it isn't even safe. The parvo virus is shed in the feces of infected dogs. We had a puppy on another forum get parvo from his own backyard because neighborhood dogs were using it for a bathroom. |
