Donating YT 500 Club Member | More things I wish I understood... I've been busy shopping online for Yorkie clothes and stuff getting ready for our little girl we are getting in about 5 weeks. Just as a point of information, today I found an insurance which does cover problems associated with a breed's genetics. If anyone is interested in the website, send me a PM. Okay, in my "travel" through cyberspace visiting the multitude of sites with Yorkie items, I have had some questions I wish I had someone to answer. I'm generally able to get some glimmer of the answer (usually from context) but there are some things that are driving me crazy wondering why... If you can help, please do! 1) What's the deal with the skull and crossbones on the cute clothes for the furbabies? Is it a logo or brand thing? I've liked some of the clothes but didn't purchase because the skull and crossbones just didn't seem to match the innocence of a Yorkie's face. 2) If any of you use the cute little caps and hats, how was the experience of first putting them on? Do you think it hurts the ears? 3) What on earth is a Yorkie-poo? Is that a term of endearment or a bathroom accident? 4) What are the doggie colognes? I mean I certainly know what cologne is but why would you slosh some on your Yorkie? Maybe I'm missing something here. 5) When we take possession of our puppy, we will then face a 7-hour drive home. We debated about getting a room halfway home but I thought it would be best to reach the house to help the puppy rest. (I know...there's probably going to be no rest...LOL) Is my thinking a mistake here? One consideration is getting home in daylight but we will be able to. 6) I think I've gotten almost everything imaginable for her and I've made her wellness appointment with the vet. I've also checked into the starting dates of the next puppy classes but haven't actually signed her up. Is there anything else I need to do? 7) Do you take water with you on your walks for your Yorkie? I've bought a gadget that resembles a water bottle but she can "drink" as dogs do but I don't know if it's really necessary. 8) Also, I bought some of the cutest, tiniest bows I've ever seen! When should I start using them or how will I know when to start? 9) Same thing about the clothes...when should I start with them? Should she be a certain age or should I start while she's still adjusting to her new home so she'll just think it's another weird thing here. She's mainly only going to wear them on walks, etc. 10) If I'm the one that does all the upkeep on her...will she associate me with the things she's not particularly fond of? I could go on and on but I know this is long. I just wonder about things and my husband is getting a bit tired of my asking him...LOL This is an exciting time but oh soooo new. I want to do it right so I don't have the trauma of having to have her "unlearn" and then learn again. I'm not even sure that made sense! Anyway, thanks for any answers. |

| - Yorkie-poo = Yorkshier Terrier crossed with Poodle. - I always carry water for her or I make a point to buy a bottle if forgotten. She drinks out of the cap while when I get thirsty I'd sometimes drink out of the lip. I also use the water to pour over her piddle to dilute it as much as possible wherever she decides to pee. - I would think making many pit stops including staying overnight somewhere a better idea than making a straight drive home. Some little ones get car sick early on until they get used to riding in the car. The puppy may be really nervous going away from all that it's ever known, so it'll be scared. - I do the grooming and look to it as another special bonding time. | I'm fairly new, but I'll answer... 1) What's the deal with the skull and crossbones on the cute clothes for the furbabies? Is it a logo or brand thing? I've liked some of the clothes but didn't purchase because the skull and crossbones just didn't seem to match the innocence of a Yorkie's face. I look pretty innocent and I love skull clothing (even have some in my tattoos). I had Darlin Bows custom make me the cutestttt little pink and black bow with a skull on it. Missy hasn't worn it yet, but when she does I will take a pic. We all have our own interpretation of what's "cute". 2) If any of you use the cute little caps and hats http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif , how was the experience of first putting them on? Do you think it hurts the ears? I don't like them. Missy has a hood on her jacket, but I usually fold it down unless it's raining. I'm not fond of caps and hats either. 3) What on earth is a Yorkie-poo? Is that a term of endearment or a bathroom http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif accident? Haha, a cross breed of a Yorkie with a Poodle. 4) What are the doggie colognes http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif ? I mean I certainly know what cologne is but why would you slosh some on your Yorkie? Maybe I'm missing something here. I'd rather my dog just smell clean from a bath. I'd head straight home, but that's just me. 6) I think I've gotten almost everything imaginable for her and I've made her wellness appointment with the vet. I've also checked into the starting dates of the next puppy classes but haven't actually signed her up. Is there anything else I need to do? Well, if you have "everything imaginable" then you must have all bases covered 7) Do you take water with you on your walks for your Yorkie? I've bought a gadget that resembles a water bottle but she can "drink" as dogs do but I don't know if it's really necessary. Missy doesn't walk very far yet, but I wouldn't bother with the water. Unless we're going to be out and about for quite awhile. 8) Also, I bought some of the cutest, tiniest bows I've ever seen! When should I start using them or how will I know when to start? I'm just starting now, and Missy's 21 weeks. 9) Same thing about the clothes...when should I start with them? Should she be a certain age or should I start while she's still adjusting to her new home so she'll just think it's another weird thing here. She's mainly only going to wear them on walks, etc. I started Missy wearing clothes (sock sweaters) as soon as I got her, only because she gets cold! She loves wearing clothes. 10) If I'm the one that does all the upkeep on her...will she associate me with the things she's not particularly fond of? I always give a treat after grooming, nails, bath etc. At first, I started with a few treats then cut it back over time as she relaxed with everything. If you do this, your pup will associate "upkeep" with something positive. It's working great for us. Missy went from hating being brushed, teeth brushed, nails cut...to loving it. I brainwashed her with treats

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Maio, Lucyaboo, and Missy, thank you for responding. I'm still shaking my head at what a Yorkie-poo is...LOL Missy, everyone does have their own taste in clothes. Apparently the clothes with the skull and crossbones are very popular or I would not have seen so many of them. I wanted to know if there was some special meaning because "eons" ago when I was growing up, the symbol meant poison and to stay away from it. Over the years our culture has a way of changing the meaning of symbols and I just wondered if it had a meaning or if it was a logo...no harm intended. You did bring up something that I have been concerned about but perhaps the breeder can advise me. I don't know if there is some general "rule" about how long a walk or even if you walk puppies in the neighborhood. For some reason (even though I know about the NutriCal and Karo syrup or honey), the drop in blood sugar scares me. I think it's partially because I've never had children or a puppy or any living thing totally dependent on me for everything. It is quite an awesome experience I would imagine. I can't wait until we get her but at the same time, I am a bit nervous, too. |

| Congrats on your new baby and welcome to YT! It great that you put so much thought into your new puppy parenthood! A Yorkie-poo is a cross breed between a Yorkie and a Poodle... Your little one will probably sleep most of the time on your way home. I would drive straight through but with a pit stop every hour... Water on a walk is only necessary if you are out more than one hour or if it is really really hot (and then a walk might not be a good idea anyway...) Until your puppy had the second round of shots I would not take it anywhere. After that take it easy until he/she is about 6 months. A word to more vaccination: It is a fairly new concern not to over vaccinante toy breeds. Maybe you could do some research on that too. What your baby needs most is love, love, love... |
1) What's the deal with the skull and crossbones on the cute clothes for the furbabies? Is it a logo or brand thing? I've liked some of the clothes but didn't purchase because the skull and crossbones just didn't seem to match the innocence of a Yorkie's face. There's a big trend of skull & crossbones with roses and hearts for Juniors, and I think it's carried over into dog clothes. Kind of a 'I can be tough and girly at the same time' thing. This is a personal choice. It also depends on whether you can find a pet friendly hotel on your way home. I personally would go home for the night. I would get her a crate all set up in the car and she can make herself at home that way. Lots of stops though. Can you drive down and stay the night with just humans and then bring the baby straight home? 7) Do you take water with you on your walks for your Yorkie? I've bought a gadget that resembles a water bottle but she can "drink" as dogs do but I don't know if it's really necessary. We don't walk very far, and we don't walk when it's hot, so we don't bring water. If you're out very long though, I'd bring water. Snoopy can drink out of the cap of a regular water bottle. 10) If I'm the one that does all the upkeep on her...will she associate me with the things she's not particularly fond of? I think that makes you the alpha dog, something you really want to be.

| 1) What's the deal with the skull and crossbones on the cute clothes for the furbabies? Is it a logo or brand thing? I've liked some of the clothes but didn't purchase because the skull and crossbones just didn't seem to match the innocence of a Yorkie's face. I'm not a fan either - we just don't buy those things 2) If any of you use the cute little caps and hats, how was the experience of first putting them on? Do you think it hurts the ears? Bubba has a Harley Davidson cap he got in a GE - he hasn't worn it a lot - but it's so cute! I'll attach a picture at the bottom (And a GE - that's a Gift Exchange that we do for fun here on YT 4 times a year - once you have a 100 posts since you are already a donating member you can participate.) 3) What on earth is a Yorkie-poo? Is that a term of endearment or a bathroom accident? Yep, Yorkie-Poodle mix 4) What are the doggie colognes? I mean I certainly know what cologne is but why would you slosh some on your Yorkie? Maybe I'm missing something here. We bypass these - we do use Buddy Splash from Cloudstar www.cloudstar.com -- love the Lavender & Mint - they do have 2 other scents to - this is not a cologne, but it does smell good, more importantly it is filled with natural oils & herbs & it is Superb at getting the tangles out! That is a long trip - the pup will most likely do a lot of sleeping. 7) Do you take water with you on your walks for your Yorkie? I've bought a gadget that resembles a water bottle but she can "drink" as dogs do but I don't know if it's really necessary. For really long walks. But I do keep a small dish in the car & take water with me if we are going to a park, or dog park & will be out walking/playing for awhile 9) Same thing about the clothes...when should I start with them? Should she be a certain age or should I start while she's still adjusting to her new home so she'll just think it's another weird thing here. She's mainly only going to wear them on walks, etc. She might need them for warmth - mine love to be warm & are often even found with a sweater on, and under a blanket - just like me 10) If I'm the one that does all the upkeep on her...will she associate me with the things she's not particularly fond of? With enough love & affection - she won't care what you do to her - she will LOVE you, for just being you! Best wishes for you & your yorkie!

| 1) What's the deal with the skull and crossbones on the cute clothes for the furbabies? Is it a logo or brand thing? I've liked some of the clothes but didn't purchase because the skull and crossbones just didn't seem to match the innocence of a Yorkie's face. A lot of people are into skulls and crossbones. I'm not sure of any brand that uses a skull and crossbones, but some brands make "punkish" clothing. Some skull & crossbones are a little too scary looking for me, but I love a cute skull & crossbone outfit. I guess it's all about preference..some people like this style and some don't. Just like you'll see Hello Kitty, butterflies, flowers, etc. on outfits. 2) If any of you use the cute little caps and hats, how was the experience of first putting them on? Do you think it hurts the ears? I dont put hats on my dogs. I don't really like the way they look, and anytime I've tried a hat on them they looked miserable. I prefer a cute bow. 3) What on earth is a Yorkie-poo? Is that a term of endearment or a bathroom accident? LOL I've always said the term "Yorkiepoo" sounded like something that would come out of my yorkie's butt (nothing against this type of dog..just the "name" people have made up for them). It is actually a Yorkie/Poodle mix. People come up with silly names for mixes these days... I don't have anything againt the mixes, but I hate the stupid names..so I refuse to use them and call them breed/breed mix instead as that's what they are 4) What are the doggie colognes? I mean I certainly know what cologne is but why would you slosh some on your Yorkie? Maybe I'm missing something here. They are dog-safe sprays to make your dog smell good. Be careful though because some dogs will have allergies to these. You're probably going to need to stop for some potty breaks, but be careful where you let the puppy potty as you don't want to expose it to other dog's germs (if it's a young puppy). You will also need to make sure the puppy eats and drinks at some point...7 hours is too long for a puppy to go without eating because they can become hypoglycemic. Take a tube of nutrical or some honey with you in case the puppy starts to become hypoglycemic on the way home. Otherwise you'll probably be okay. 6) I think I've gotten almost everything imaginable for her and I've made her wellness appointment with the vet. I've also checked into the starting dates of the next puppy classes but haven't actually signed her up. Is there anything else I need to do? If you don't plan to groom your yorkie yourself, I'd start researching groomers in your area to make sure you find a good one. Talk to other small dog owners and the groomers in shops your interested in. Sometimes good grooming shops will book up far in advance so you might want to check into that. I do suggest you don't actually take your puppy for her appointment though until she's completed all her vaccines. 7) Do you take water with you on your walks for your Yorkie? I've bought a gadget that resembles a water bottle but she can "drink" as dogs do but I don't know if it's really necessary. Not on normal walks, but I would if it was going to be a longer walk than normal or if it's an especially hot day. 8) Also, I bought some of the cutest, tiniest bows I've ever seen! When should I start using them or how will I know when to start? I started putting Lacy's hair up when I got her at 11 weeks. It really just depends on much hair your puppy has. I would start with just putting a little bit of hair in a band to get her used to the feeling of having a little topknot. Once she's used to that, then start adding the bows. 9) Same thing about the clothes...when should I start with them? Should she be a certain age or should I start while she's still adjusting to her new home so she'll just think it's another weird thing here. She's mainly only going to wear them on walks, etc. I started putting clothes on Lacy right when I got her as well. I think it's good to get them used to it early if you can. Make sure you get clothes that fit well because if they are too tight or too loose they will bother her. I suggest starting with a sleeveless tank. A lot of dogs don't like sleeves, especially at first..and a tank shirt is the easiest to start them out in. 10) If I'm the one that does all the upkeep on her...will she associate me with the things she's not particularly fond of? I do everything for my dogs and they love me. However, they will recognize a routine. For example, they know when I bring the hairdryer downstairs and get shampoo bottles out that they are going to get a bath and that's when they try to hide. When they see me get the toothbrush or petzlife gel out they will sometimes try to hide. So I don't really think they associate the bad things with me exactly, but they will find things that cue them in on what's about to happen. Of course you want to try to make these experiences as pleasant as possible
