My Little Man! Donating Member | I had a scare today! What a scare I had today! I took Maxi out across the street of my house. I live in a community development. He got spooked and a little Houdini got out of his harness! He got scared of this lady who was getting her mail and started pulling. The next thing I know he is out of his harness. He kind of stood still for a moment as he was wondering what happened. I looked around if there were any cars coming in order to figure out what to do best. Thank god the speed limit is 15 miles per hour in my community. My streets in development are tiny. So as I realized there were no cars at all I calmly said Maxi lets go home quick. He ran to the house which was few steps from us and then I ordered him to stay which he did. He knows stay and lets go home commands very good. I made the harness tighter and we continued to walk around. Make sure your baby knows the stay command as it is very important and can save your little one's life. When they get spooked they panic and sometimes might not listen to the command so you have to be as calm as you can.

| Wow! That is scary! I do tons of recall training - especially with my Shiba Inu (shiba's cannot ever be trusted off-lead due to their high prey drive). Even now, everytime I call their names and they come, I praise them like crazy. It comes in handy when you get in a situation like yours. Awesome that your dog went home and stayed put when you asked. Kudo's for good training! |

| Oh my, if that happened to me, I would've pee-ed in my pants. I've accidentally dropped their lead before, & I would pick it up so fast...you would've thought there was a $100 bill on the ground! Yes, I agree, it's very important to teach our babies the command 'STAY'.

| great post You can never be reminded of this enough. In addition to checking the tightness of the harness, I also always double check the integrity of the plastic buckle attachment. One of my guys has serious aggression issues when he sees anything new (we are working on that, but its really tough training), if he were to get away he easily could run out into the street. I am trying to break him of trying to chase after cars - it would be heartbreaking if due to a mistake with the harness he were to get loose doing this. |
