| Is this ok? Puddin' is here and she is even more precious than we had imagined! My husband is captivated and I'm just wrapped around her tiny little paws. Will post some pics later. Here's the question: we have a crate and a basket prepared for her. She is very compliant about being in the basket or crate, but she doesn't seem to want to really sleep in them...just doze and wake up fitfully. Right now, she she totally conked out, sleeping like the dead...inside my Tshirt, snuggled up against my tummy (she started out on my boobs but slid down as she relaxed). I've nurtured sick and runt puppies this way, but not "normal" ones. Has anybody else experienced this? How long is too long to allow this to continue? When we take in rescues, we usually let them sleep in our bed for the first couple of nights as a kind of bonding exercise and to help the dog feel secure, but after a few days they have to sleep in the doggie bed...should we apply the same principle to Puddin'? Obviously she will eventually get too big to sleep inside my shirt, so how long is too long?

| I would think that it is your sent that she is comforted by. I would try putting a dirty t shirt of yours in her crate or basket. Milo sleeps in his own bed at night but you can bet the miniute I get up he is in my bed where I slept rolling around. |

| Mine, age 3 and 4, still sleep rolled up against me. And, yes, you are right, as soon as I take anything off they grab it and lay on it and when I get up from the couch they immediately lay in the spot I was sitting. They are such funny sweethearts.

| My Maltese male will immediately take over any spot I have been sitting/laying on. In fact, he does it so often, we have a command for him "move over!" The female Maltese likes to sleep on my husband's pillow. I'm pondering which Tshirt to wear all day and sacrifice to Puddin at bedtime!

| How old is Puddin? If she's a puppy then not only does she like your scent but your body heat.

| Yup, she's a pup. She came out from under the Tshirt about 20 minutes ago, panting, so the body heat may have been a bit much for her! She conked out again after playing for a few minutes and I gently moved her to her basket where she is sleeping in a little fleece blanket.

| I can't really say that the snuggling is bad. My Roxy is usually in my hoodie on my chest or dragging her blankie around looking for someone to pick her up and snuggle.......I don't think it's a bad thing and she's 9mts old now. I got her for that reason and she would much rather be there than anywhere else. When she's done playing or eating or whatever she's trying to discover, it's right back to the safty. I think it makes them feel safe, and secure so that they can sleep better. |

| She is in a new home and has bonded with you! She feels safe, secure and warm when as close to you as possible, just like her mother dog. Now you have become her Human mom and she rather be close to you! It is the best thing to do , is to give her something with your scent on it that she can curl up into. That way she will not depend on being right on you all the time!

| I don't know the right way to go about this at all, or even how exactly to have learned from our "mistake"(?), but we spoiled our little boy with holding him all the time for naps, and we're paying for it now... When he's tired, he won't just go lay down somewhere on his own and snooze. Instead, he follows us around and whines and growls and just acts horribly pitiful in the hopes that one of us will put him on our lap so he can get to sleep. (This is for daytime naps only of course - he's good about his crate at bedtime). He has literally followed me around, dead tired and eyes barely half open, whining, for over an hour. In the past few days we've been ignoring him figuring he'd eventually HAVE to go lay down on his own. He has, but it's an incredibly difficult hour or so before he's so exhausted he gets up on a couch and passes out (and for some reason for these naps he just has to be perched precariously up on the top of the couch, not on the sitting part). Though I don't know exactly what I would change to help fix this issue if I ever get another puppy, I think there has to be some helping the pup learn to recognize on his own when he's tired, and be able to lay down on his own - maybe not in the first week you have her, but at some point. But like I said, I don't really know exactly what I should have done differently, they're just so wonderful to snuggle with and hold. Nikko is napping on the couch right now, but only after he fell asleep first 20 min ago on his dad's lap, and his dad gently transplanted him onto the couch. Lauren & Nikko PS: I really don't mean to sound like a downer, lol. Just realized I might've come off that way... but it really does sound like she's bonded with you, which is such a wonderful WONDERFUL thing. :-) The day-old tshirt is a great idea! Hopefully that helps you a bit. Last edited by lemonlauren; 02-07-2009 at 05:46 PM. |

| I am of no help here coz I would probably welcome any cuddles and snuggles that I could get. Mine is not a big cuddler but he does sleep with us (he won't cuddle but would sleep right by my side) so I feel that it is okay for him to be a little independant during the day and sleep with us during the night.

| Yah, I like the snuggling too, but I also agree that she needs to have some independence (and so do I!) when it comes to her sleeping. Not in the first week, of course, but before she is in her dotage, to be sure! We had a pretty good night, but towards early morning she got fretful and the only solution was to put her next to me on the bed. Of course, because she is so tiny, I could not really go back to sleep, just fitful dozing. Now, it is 7:30 am, she's back in her basket snoozing and I'm up! Somehow this reminds me of when my children were first home...
