Confused Cotton Coat?

Every time I start reading more, I learn more about this breed and just am falling in love. I have a couple questions about the 'cotton coat' - I know it is not in the breed standard, but I was wondering...

1. What makes them have the cottony coat?

2. How rare is it?

3. Do you know when they are puppies(prior to selling) if they are going to have that coat?

and 4. I really like the look of the cottony ones, but refuse to support bad breeding/breeders. So, would there be any real way to get a cottony coated yorkie from a decent breeder?

1. What makes them have the cottony coat? Genetics, maybe a parent or a grandparent was a cotton coat

2. How rare is it? Its pretty common unfortunately

3. Do you know when they are puppies(prior to selling) if they are going to have that coat? Its hard to tell with puppys. Usually they have a very thick coat so that may be one way of telling

and 4. I really like the look of the cottony ones, but refuse to support bad breeding/breeders. So, would there be any real way to get a cottony coated yorkie from a decent breeder?
They shouldnt but many do. I quess it is possible to find one that is decent that would but they still arent following the standard

Now My question to you is are you sure you want one with a cotton coat? I know they look good when they are pups but I have 2 with cotton coats and I usually keep them shaved down. Their hair matts and grooming is a pain with cotton coats. I would love to grow their hair long but its just not worth the hastle

Well, I wasn't sure. I am still doing research on them. I really like the 'fluffy' puppy cut look but it would be nice to be able to let them grow too...... So many decisions!!!

Do the silky coats look 'fluffy' with a puppy cut when they are grown?

Also, of course looks are NOT my main criteria...... these Q's are more out of curiosity then anything else.

I am not sure both of mine are cotton coats. I know silks do tend to be thinner than a cotton

Your right, a cotton coat takes constant care and even then still tangles. Several weeks ago I shaved Gracie except for her head for this reason. I really miss the long look but she is so much easier to take care of. The poor thing was getting brushed twice a day and still looked like she hadn't been brushed for a week!! I'm sure she's thrilled with her new haircut and not having to put up with being constantly groomed.

I believe that I have one of each!!

I don't really have problems with Daizy's cotton coat..as long as I brush her every day...her coat is beautiful...although it will never grow to the floor...and that's fine by me...I won't let either of my babies coats grow that long..

I'm still waiting for Tulips coat to start looking good!! LOL She has a silky coat...her coat is very thin...and it looks unkept every day..even right after I give her a bath...and brush her......however when she's full grown...and her coat comes in its going to be beautiful...my sister has a silky and OMG her coat is beautiful...but you still have to brush a silky's coat every day too..either way it's high maintenance for both type of coats unless you keep them in a puppy cut..

Maybe some are more cottony than others because I would brush Jewels a couple times a day and she would still get matts. Also when I would put her hair up in a topknot it would matt

My yorkie has a silky coat, and to be honest. I brush her a couple times a week and never find any mats! It is so easy to care for I find and would definitely love another "silky coat" yorkie one day. The coat is thinner, soft and silky. I'm growing Stormy's coat right now, it is getting pretty long, I find it grows very quickly!

My Zada has the silky coat. I had it long but it still requires brushing a couple times a day and will still easily mat. I recently cut her into a puppy cut and it's so much easier to take care of and she was so happy when I got it cut back. She perked up like she was a young puppy.
Azrael has the cotton coat and extremely thick. It is just way too difficult to take care of when it's long, so I keep her cut real short on the body and neck and longer on the tail, legs and head. Easy to manage.
Razael is also a cotton coat, but her hair is thin, so I haven't cut it. I don't have a difficult time taking care of her coat at all.

My Daisy has a cotton coat and My Gus has a silky...Daisy's hair mats quickly and I have to keep her shorter than I like and My Gus looks better if his hair is longer. I love Gus's hair because if he gets tangles I can blow dry them when I brush him and they come out very easy! Oh and Daisy's hair has stayed that nice black color she is over 4 years and Gus's hair comes in silver and then black and then silver...So who knows what he will end up he is 1 year...And I don't know if this is common with cotton coats but Daisy did have a fuller coat of hair than Gus did when he was her age...

My Pixie has a silky coat that is a dream to care for. It is stick straight and rarely mats. Cali and Roxie have cottony coats and even theirs are different than each others. Both mat pretty bad and I groom every day. Given the choice I would pick silky but I seem to see many more cottony coats for sale. I bought Pixie as an adult so I don't know what she looked like as a puppy.

Daisy has a cottony coat and she rarely ever matts. I could comb her hair once a week with a comb with no problem and maybe find a small matt under her front legs and/or maybe at the bottom of one of her ears if she has been scratching it. I keep her hair short and it is a dream to care for. Maybe she is an exception for a cotton coat.

Buddy has a silky coat and I have always kept him either in a puppy
cut or shaved down with longer hair on his legs and face.

We are growing his coat out now for the first time and it's growing
fast. I am finding that he mats under the arms pits so far.
I am trying my best not to shave him down. I want to see this
big boy in a full coat. I know it won't get to the floor, he's too darn
tall but I just love seeing that famous Yorkie part down the back.
It's already down the front of his head down the back to the neck.
IT's not quite long enough on his back but it's getting there.
He's so soft.

Question

I'm no expert. I didn't know that they were undesirable. I know their are more than the cottony coats, and the silk coat. Their's a modified silk coat too. The breeder that sold me my dog explained that you can tell a cotton coated dog by the color of the eyes when you take a picture of them. Red would mean cottony, and green, or gold is a modified , or silk coat. I haven't had much of a chance to test out that theory yet though. I did think it was interesting!
