| Potty suggestions? I've inherited a doggie door for my slider at my aparment for my deck. My thoughts are to put a pad out there for them to use, although I think they'll use my plant pots I've also thought of getting or making a pet-o-potty type thing (box with some sod). Or maybe the litter box thing but I think Murphy will eat the little pellets.. I generally leave them free in the house with belly bands but I think that's actually hindering the process. My new idea is to gate them into the kitchen with pads during the day, give them access to the patio while I'm home and at night put Alphy in a band (he sleeps with me) and Murphy in the crate. I can't leave them with full access to the patio while I am gone or at night because they will bark at people. Any ideas or suggestions? This is a new concept for us.... p.s. this is somewhat a training question but also a general idea of what other's do question so if a moderator or admin needs to move it, please do so and sorry..... __________________

Senior Yorkie Talker | hello. i do not really have any suggestions for you, but i am dealing with the same thing now. When we first got our baby we had his going on pee pads in the living room where we can watch him but now the patio is set up for him so he can go out there to do his business. Im not really sure however, how to make the transition because if i dont leave out a pee pad in the living room, he will pee in that spot anyway but im afraid if i leave the pad he will just keep going in side, and never outside. I try taking him out ever so often to make him go potty outside but if he doesnt go, as soon as i bring him back in, he pees where his pad usually goes! driving me nuts. any suggestions?? p.s. I would also like to train him to let me know when he needs to go outside instead of my just taking him there myself ever hour....any suggestions on how to train him to let me know when its time to go??

| Some people use bells. Put them on the front door or near the area and teach him to ring the bell to go out. You might leave the pad there in the area he is used to it and then slowly move it towards the door. Eventually he should just go to the door area. I live in an apartment and I just take them out every couple of hours. My door is not easily visible from the house but Alphy has started going and sitting in an area near the door in hopes I notice him . Murphy was pad trained but my folks have come for an extended visit along with their dog which has started a territorial pp war all over my house and he's forgotten how the pads work.... Alphy is a night pooper. He won't poo in the house at all until sometime during the middle of the night he'll go either on the bathroom rug or in the laundry/kitchen rug.

Senior Yorkie Talker | haha night pooper. yeah iv heard of people using a bell...i thought about it but it does seem like a lot of work. i would be happy even if he sat by the patio door and let out one bark but that might be hard to do. any moving the pad slowly to the door would be a good idea except that where the pad is now is in a complete different area of the apartment. argh. Potty training him to the pad was so easy, i just hope he cathes on to the out side just as easy! I always give him a treat after he goes outside, and 2 if he goes number one AND two! haha and he knows he gets a treat too cause once hes done his buisness he comes over to me and sits at my feet! hes so cute.... i might try the bell thing, just for fun and if he never gets it, then ill love him anyway
