Questions About Golden & Parti Yorkies

I find all of this very interesting. I believe that both the Partis and the Biewers are gorgeous animals and would be proud to own either of them. When it comes to genetics and and the process of creating life it is amazing that any creature can come out to a "standard". I have a daughter with a genetic syndrome that neither her father nor I neither one have or carry. She is a "medical mystery" so to speak that doctors can't explain. (Sorry to get off topic!) Sometimes things just happen and you have to take them as they come!

If breeders do not breed those colors they will die out. That is what the YTCA would like to see happen. I did not say that they meant for the off colored dogs to die, but the off colors would become extinct through selective breeding. However that did not happen because it is part of the gene pool and too widespread.

Thank you for answering the question as to "who" was breeding to this standard. I had no idea that you guys had formed any sort of club (although now looking, I see it). That was all I was trying to figure out by asking the question in the first place. So there is a standard for partis that has been adopted by the Colorful Yorkshire Terrier Club...correct?

Yes that is correct. We have adopted everything except for the color limitations.

Standards are a goal for breeders to strive to meet, especially for the show ring, but if a yorkie is born from two championed parents and it doesn't meet the standards due to being off colored, over or under sized, bad bite ..., these dogs are still Yorkshire terriers. Same is true of any other AKC registered yorkie who does not meet the standards, they are yorkies and normally they are not required to or asked to make a "new" set of standards that will more accurately reflect their type, color, size or whatever sets them apart from the standard.

Why are parti's being asked to make "standards" for their coloring? Black and tan coated yorkies are not asked to make new standards are they?

I would be very happy if the AKC required all new litters to be DNA'd as a requirement prior to being registered ... that way, 50 years down the road, when a parti pup appears in a litter of traditional parents, they'll have 50 previous years of DNAing to prove parentage. Horse registries have been requiring Bloodtyping and DNA in a number of breeds for years - maybe it's time to get the dog world to do the same too.

Just wanted to say that I got a Biewer for Christmas...she is so laid back ...sweet personality.....she loves to play with Penny...but compared to Penny, Angel (Named because of her being a Christmas present)..is so laid back...not hyper at all...I just love her....

I am very happy that I came across this site because I have so many questions about parti-yorkies. On Saturday, I am supposed to be buying a parti-[COLOR=green! important][COLOR=green! important]yorkie[/COLOR][/COLOR] from a breeder. Honestly, when I saw the ad for this puppy, I just "fell in love." I had no idea what a parti-yorkie was.

Do you think there are any questions I should ask the breeder or any tests I should have him do on the yorkie before I bring her home?
I have no intention on breeding her, but I'd like a healthy puppy.

Also, I am a little confused about [COLOR=green! important][COLOR=green! important]AKC[/COLOR][/COLOR] registration of Parti-Colored Yorkies. Is it true that a Parti-Colored Yorkie can be registered under the AKC code 014?

If so, do any combinations of colors not qualify? For example, would a majority [COLOR=green! important][COLOR=green! important]white [COLOR=green! important]dog[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] with black and or tan on its coat as well be able to qualify?

Also, in general, is the lifespan of a parti-yorkie the same as the lifespan of a traditional yorkie?

Could you tell me as much as you can about Parti-Colored Yorkies as well like, for example, should any special genetic testing be done on the puppy before purchasing one?
