| My first post... An introduction along with a question :-) I would like to start this post by saying hello to all of the members on the board I have been an avid searcher and browser of this site since I adopted my little guy in October, but I have yet to post. I have never had a Yorkie before, but I am so happy now that I do! Just to give a little background, I'm a 29-year-old elementary school teacher. My Yorkie, Diesel, was a surprise addition to my life-- I took him off the hands of one of my students (actually, the student's parents) because they didn't want him They have two other dogs, a pitbull and something else, and they didn't want Diesel! Well, their loss is my gain... He has brought so much love and joy into my life in such a short time! Anyway, I am truly appreciative of the wealth of information and real-life reviews and opinions available in these forums. With that being said, however, I sometimes find myself paralyzed by the overwhelming amount of information and differing opinions... For example, I am on the prowl for a great shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and toothbrush (or finger brush). I realize that product selection is a process of trial and error, and what works for one may not work for another, but I'm getting so confused! It seems like one day I can be using the "it" product, and the next day a report will come out that I am feeding my dog the Ebola virus(extreme example, but you get the idea) Does anyone else feel like this? I have spent HOURS browsing through the info on this site (as, I'm sure, many of you have) and I feel like I go around in circles. How do you weed through it all? Thanks for reading my first post. I promise to make an effort to be a more active participant Julie |

| Welcome!!! There is definitely alot of info on this site and I can see why it could get overwhelming. What I would do with shampoos is I would order one use it untill it ran out then order a different one. I kept doing that untill I found one I loved. You can always start a thread and people will tell you what their favorites are and thats good for giving you an idea which ones to try

| Hi Julie... Welcome to YT!!!! Nice to have you here! As for the wealth on information I feel just like you. One day I think I found THE best food and then my babies don't like it... Trial and error... that's it... but there are a few guidelines you can pick from all the info: - all grocery store brands are not really good... - there should not be a lot of 'byproducts', wheat, corn and salt in a good food and the 'beef-', 'lamb-', 'turkey' and/or 'chicken-meal' contents should be under the first three ingredients mentioned... As for the shampoo it needs to be either a special doggie product (but not 'Hartz') or a very good human shampoo. Mine do really good with the Aveno oatmeal shampoo... |

| Hi! Welcome! After doing your best to research a product, trial and error really is the only way to see what works for you. I have 3 Yorkies and of course what works for 2 won't work for the third. So far the only thing that I've found that works for all 3 is the food. Yeah! At least I don't have to buy three types of food. Snacks, shampoo, toys, etc...well that's another story.

| Welcome to Julie and Diesel Welcome to YorkieTalk. Isn't it a wonderful place. So full of knowledgeable people willing to help out. My personal preferences for shampoo is Minksheen, and I homecook for most of my crew and am working at switching over the rest. With such a limited amount of regulation in the pet food industry and with so many recalls and so many beloved pets getting sick and dying it is very scary. Even the premium brands are having recalls. I agree with you 100% -- what ultimately works for you is going to be found through much trial and error. There are so many "right" answers out there, you just have to find the ones that work for you. Can't wait to see pics and hear all about your little bundle of love. Thank you for dedicating your life to starting our wee little ones on the right path in their education. I worked in an elementary school library for 13 years as a parapro and I know the challenges that teachers face every day. |

| Hi and welcome! You have already found out that this is a great site with great people on it! I feed my little ones a home made mix of boiled ground turkey, green beans, carrots, brown rice, and a small amount of potato in the morning then Nutro for thir afternoon feeding. Having three dogs is difficult sometimes so one dog will be easier for you. Can't wait to see photos! |

| Welcome to you and Diesel! Walker also says hi. There is a lot of information and I use most of it for what it is. A review. I feed Walker Prey Model Raw and he loves it, but I also think that he could live healthy and happy on high quality kibble with no by-products or -meals. Or on home cooking. As for shampoo I use a high quality human shampoo and conditioner for straight hair mostly because I can't read the German pet products and don't see the need to buy it offline. Good luck and as long as you're loving on the pup and seeing his reactions toy your different product choices you'll do great. Good luck and congrats on the the new adddition! |

| Email the MinkSheen people and ask for a free sample. They sent me a really kinda big one - it's going to last me at least a few months probably! You'll be able to see if you like it that way. I like it quite a bit - it still smells like dog shampoo, not human, but very nice clean dog. I like that :-) Welcome to YT! There's so much information on here, and so many helpful people, I love it! And I'm sure my lil boy Nikko appreciates it as well... Lauren & Nikko |

| Thank you all so much for the very warm welcome! I have read all of your responses, and I want to thank you once again for the helpful information and advice. I apologize for not responding sooner, but I've been busy trolling the internet looking up the pet product companies recommended on this site and begging them for samples! Teaching doesn't pay enough for me to purchase full sized products for the trial and error process! LOL |

| W*E*L*C*O*M*E! I think it's great that you are researching and finding the best products for your Yorkie. We like "Isle of Dogs" shampoo and conditioner. and "Ice on Ice" spray in detangler by Chris Christensen. I also use a Chris Christensen pinbrush, and a Madan Comb. As far as toothbrushing, I had to find the teeniest dog toothbrush that I could because Missy's mouth is too tiny to use a fingerbrush. For toothpaste I grabbed a peanut flavoured Natural toothpaste by Petrodex.
