ALREADY Stressing about summer trip w/o Mia You guys will understand! DD and I will leave here on 6/25 to go to FL for my niece's wedding- we'll return on 7/10. DH & DS will leave on 6/30 and not return until 7/7. I basically have 3 choices as to what to do with Mia for the week they are gone - each of which I'm already stressing over! 1. Take Mia to a kennel and board her. There is a VERY nice boarding/training/grooming one near my home, but it is a kennel. This would cost about $25/day($200 + grooming) 2. Put DH and DS on an airline that allows pets and make them bring her. The flight would cost $160, and I doubt she'd be very happy flying for 3 - 5 hours and we'd likely have to sedate/medicate her some. Problem here is we are in hotels & at wedding the 30/1/2 and then we are going to theme parks - Busch Gardens on 7/3 and then staying at Hard Rock Hotel on 7/4 - 7. She is fine when we are with her in a hotel, but cries nonstop when we leave. I MIGHT be able to leave her at my sister's or nieces the day we are at Busch, but both have aging Labs and I'm not sure how they would do. Otherwise, she would have to stay in the kennel at the themeparks or in our hotel room being noisy. There would be approx $100 in pet fees at the hotels, plus any fees at the theme park kennels. 3. I could block off my kitchen and she would have that area plus the attached sun porch. My oldest DS lives in an apt and could come by once a day to check on her, but likely would be in and out, not for any length of time. I could also pay a friend's son to come over daily for about an hour or so to play with her, but she would be alone most of the time. Maybe my DS's girlfriend could as well, but she doesn't drive due to seizures so not sure. Mia shreds her pee pads, so I'm sure the floor would be disgusting - she mainly goes outside. Plus, being alone for so long, even with lots of chew toys & stuff DH is afraid she might eat our cupboards, woodwork, & furniture. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions. I did not sleep at all the other night pondering all of this - while she snuggled up next to me. Any suggestions? We have a few months, but I'm not sure how to go about preparing her for any of these options. TIA Julie

I would put her in the kennel. She will be safe, and if she needs vet care they will be able to get it for her. I do not the folks that run kennels do try to spend time with them and let them play. I would feel much better knowing she was safe. I am so afraid with my dogs leaving them in a hotel of someone stealing her and at home what if something happened and they only checked once a day. Very scary, I would worry too, and then you won't have a good time. Enjoy your vacation, put her in a kennel where she is safe and you won't have to worry about her.

I'm leaning toward the kennel option. I'm going to take her there to be groomed next week. My friend 'dropped' in today just to check it out for me and said it was VERY nice. I am also going to try to check out their class schedule. Maybe if she goes there for classes she will get used to it.

I've been there (stressing about vacations). I tried taking her with me, but, she stressed out in the hotel without us there. She is not used to being in a kennel, she threw up when we put her in one for the day while we were at disney, so, that was not an option. So, I ended up getting another dog so she would have a playmate. Then, I hired a pet sitter to come 4 times a day to check on them and take them for a walk and play with them. I also had family come at various times to play with them. I think that was the least stressful for them of all the options. Good luck with you decision. It's a difficult one! Karen

When I have to leave mine, I have used a pet sitter. Lucky and Maddie have been left with one before, but Rudy never has. I very seldom leave mine if I can't take them I don't go, but when there had been a death in the family in Flordia I have to go. I am worring right now My grandma is 96 and just this past Sunday took a turn for the worst. We brought her home Wend. and started Hospice. She has had a great life. She is going to be laid to rest in Tampa so I will be there. I hate to leave my furbabies, but Doc recommended loves and he loves dogs and if anything does happen Doc knows to do what ever it takes to save them.................Cindy

I am going on a cruise on Monday and will be gone for 6 days so I will have to leave my baby also. Luckily I have a great friend that will be staying at my apartment with her. His apartment is close to mine. She knows him and she will be able to stay home where she is comfortable and where she has the run of the house. My problem is just that I am gonna miss her so bad. I am worried that I am gonna wish I were home with her instead of cruising in Mexico.

i would say pet sitter too, i would NEVER put my baby in a kennel.... do you know how many diseases and germs they can pick up with so many dogs in close quarters like that???.... anyways, i would go with the keeping her in the kitchen approach, if you are worried about your cabinets you could buy some bitter apple spray and have whoever comes over spray that stuff lightly around the cabinets once a day...... this is only one opnion in many, and most people seem to be leaning towards the kennel, but i personally wouldnt want to risk it.... toby has had kennel cough allready in his short life and let me just tell you it is AWFUL, and most diseases in these places are spread quickly...... But most of all, dont stress over it, it will all work out in the end... you are doing great research on options and i applaud you for tearing yourself away from your furbaby (i know ive gotten so attached a normal workday seems like forever,.... i dont think i could go for a week..... what do you think my fiance would say if i told him i didnt want to leave toby to go on a honeymoon????? lol.... guess he would have to come with us)

Out of the 3 options, I'd say kennel, as you don't know what kind of reaction your Mia will have to a foreign hotel room when you are not there. But as orinskye says, a pet sitter is ideal if at all possible. Is there any way your children could take care of Mia more than an hour a day?

I was hoping my son would be able to stay with Mia, but he works full time and is in college full time. Everyone I know has dogs, so having her stay with someone isn't an option. I'm hopin maybe I can rustle up enough people to stay with her and maybe have my son sleep here with her. Every time I snuggle her at night now I think about having to leave her. It's sad!!
