I was told by my vet not to breed Missy if she's under 5 lbs. I had no intentions of it anyways, but just thought that I'd pass that info on.

If you are planning on breeding her "one day" please do your research beforehand.

I am new to this board (I have been reading for a couple months, and have always looked on here for advice) and I'm a little disappointed in the responses that I'm seeing. This person posted on here with questions out of concern for her dog! Just because they are not as informed as you are does not mean that they dont love their dog. That's why they are posting! Please, give them a break...geez.
To the original poster: I would call your vet and tell them exactly what you wrote here and I'm sure they will have an educated response for you. I hope your puppy is just fine

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. There is a way to be informative without being rude. That is why I tried to express the dangers without being judgemental. But that is beating a dead horse. That discussion happens all the time, and nothing changes. People come here looking for help and advice, bad pet owners don't do that, and yet many times they are scared off after their first post, just because they werent exceptionally educated about the breed before they came here. History should show that the approach that is used here sometimes has never been effective.

Ok, I really HIGHLY recommend that you get your dog to the vet ASAP and get xrays done. If they are all over 50lbs, that is CRAZY..

Xrays would not show a puppy until the mom was almost due. Nothing would show yet. I believe she said the other neighborhood dogs were over 50lbs but the dogs that were in her yard were little like her dog. Plus, the mom determines the size of the pups typically.

My little girl gets very swollen when she is in heat. It may just be that.... I am not an expert on breeding, but I have heard it takes time. Best to consult with your vet.

(For those who may be wondering, mine is not spayed because she is too small to tolerate anesthesia.)

If you were only away from her for 5 minutes, I am guessing she was not bred. It would be unusual for a dog to be able to breed her and complete a tie in that time frame. Yes they can get bred without a true tie, but even then you probably would have caught the male positioned as if he thought he had tied or still attempting to mount her.

There is no way to tell that a bitch has been bred right away, the earliest way to detect it for certain is via ultrasound and that is around 28 days.

I'd say learn from this oopsie and make sure you know the signs of her coming in heat.

As for whether to breed her in the future, I would have an experienced yorkie breeder examine her to see if it is a safe (or good) idea.

Take it from experience they dont have to tie for a long period. My 4.5 lber was in heat, I kept my boy and her separated during the day and he had a weenie wrap on when I was home. The little dickens somehow wiggled it loose and mounted her. They tied all of about 10 seconds. I thought I got lucky. No way. She got pregnant, had two puppies and a c section. I was lucky he was only about 1/2 lb bigger than her and she had a good vet. I had her spayed at the same time. I would have died had something happened to her. Please dont take chances. Call your vet and get her spayed. Good luck to you.

There is a shot the vet can give her, similar to the "morning after" pill that will help to eliminate a pregnancy if, indeed, she got "caught". However, from yesterday until Friday (the next time you could see a vet without ER fees) may be too late.

From what I have read, larger females are bred to smaller males. At 3 lbs., your little angel would be at very large risk ... HER life, as well as her puppies, would be at risk. She would probably need a C-section to deliver.

Hopefully, she didn't get caught. But I know of no way to determine that so early.

Isn't that shot extremely risky and can possibly cause pyometra?

I would definately be calling my vet and asking these questions. How soon can you tell if the female is pregnant, ect. And I would take every precaution possible in proctection my very tiny female from getting pregnant. I agree that it is dangerous for the female, and could cost her , her life, being so tiny and young to get pregnant.
My Suzi is 9 months old and about 8 lbs. She is not spayed yet, and I am not planning on having her have puppies. She is going to be fixed in the spring before her 1rst birthday.
I do not want to gamble my girl's health and put her at risk of all kinds of complications. Even though she is a larger Yorkie, It still scares me, and it is not a chance I am willing to take.

Thanks so much for all the replies I do want to make clear that If i do ever breed her it would NOT be to sale. I Love yorkies, but most of all I love prissy and would not do anything to put her in any danger. I will talk with the vet about breeding her and if he thinks it is not safe I will most likely spayed.
