I am buying a Diaper Genie now!! :p We use Pee Pee pads, I use Little Stinkers and they work VERY WELL, absorb very well and do not smell. I change them out after the 3rd peepee and pick up the poo and flush it when Gucci goes. My husband is very picky but he doesn't complain because you cannot smell it. Our Garbage is right on the side of the house so I just toss them out there. But a Diaper Genie is a MARVELOUS IDEA LADYMOM!!! |
Bunni is Pee pad trained as well, I use the washable ones because she won't go on the disposable ones (she thinks they're toys and tries to shred them) She also doesn't have a problem sharing because I'll bring her to Michigan for visits and my parents dogs will use the pad and she'll still go on it. I do need to get a diaper genie though! I just use a trashbag to get a load full and store them on the deck so that they don't smell. (I don't always have time to wash them every day) My ex actually bought them for me from piddlepads.com they were like 60 bucks for 12 |
pee pads rule when its COLD outside Have to agree with the other posters, the pads are a great idea to augment the normal walks. My guys get 2 or 3 walks a day, but it isn't enough. Strange that no one mentioned the issues I have with the pads: One of my yorkies is terrible at getting her pee on the pad, even when it’s fresh. She likes to live on the edge, and she pees the way she lives. This means that most times she uses the pad, it gets underneath and you end up wasting a lot of toilet paper drying and cleaning the tile beneath the pad. This is REALLY Annoying behavior, and difficult for us to correct since you want to praise her for using the pee pad, but NOT ON the edge. She just doesn't get it. Plus, she absolutely refuses to use the pad unless we take her in the bathroom and close the door; she will not go in by herself but we need to close her in for 5 minutes to get her to pee. Our male is great and goes on the pad by himself with no trouble, and knows not to do it on the edge making a mess. His only minor issue is that he (for some reason known only to the yorkie gods) refuses to poop outside and will only do it on the pad. Peeing is no problem, inside or out, but poop is only to be done on the pad. When he does poop outside (and this is really rare, like once or twice a month), it’s always an "accident" like in the middle of the sidewalk. He does not plan it like his sister does. Clean up is easy and it would be hard to live without the pads, but these guys all have their strange ways. If the expense is too much, newspaper also works well, but evenutally the newsprint will leach off and make a mess. I also worry that the newsprint gets on their paws and then onto the carpet, so when we changed the carpet we did away with the newspaper and now only use pad for indoors. :) |
Mia uses pee pads, but she has her own personal potty. I got a medal kennel when she was small, put a old rug I got on clearance at Christmas inside the kennel with a pee pad on top of rug. This way she can't pee outside of the pee pad. I keep the door open and she has learned this is her own potty. I change the pad everyday, because she doesn't like a dirty pad. I put the pad in a wal mart bag and dispose in trash outside. This has worked very well for me. When she was little I'd put her in while training her and shut the door until she went, which was most of the time. After that she learned that was her potty. After about a year, I've been able to put my rugs back down in my house. She always goes to her potty. I have always praised her using her potty. I also take her potty with me anywhere we go, like vacations. That helps too... Good luck and were looking forward to your new baby.. |
Bella uses pee pads. She was trained as a puppy, so when I got her at 12 weeks, she was doing so good that I didnt want to change. I'm glad I didnt. I love the pee pads. Don't have to worry about the weather, dirt, etc anymore. I'm very picky about them. I have one on the hard wood floor and change it about every 3rd pee too. She goes to work with me and I have two there side by side. I always pick up the poo as soon as she does it and flushes it. I never put them in the inside garbage. I have a special one out in the garage. I don't have a problem with smell. Sometimes if her morning pee is strong, I'll change it right after that . I do hate it when they get on the edge and it gets underneath. Bella doesnt do it very often, but it happens from time to time. My hubby hates seeing the pad and it really bugs him, but oh well. Bella does a great job so that's what matters...lol |

I went and bought my diaper genie earlier tonight. |
Both of my girls use pee pads, and my house has no smell. I take the poo and flush it and throw the pad away. I couldn't leave a pad down after they have pooped on it. I use the pads from Sam's and change it about 4-6 times, depending on how often they have to pee. Puppies, pee more so you will find that you are changing them more often. I wash the area at least once a day just to make sure that there is no smell, and have never had to use any type of deodorizer the pads usually have some sort of deodorizer in them anyway. My girls also get there bums washed after pooping, these little ones have the run of the house:) Tammy |

Good luck! |
I use the disposable potty pads. I change her pads atleast 4/5 times a day and I flush any poo's down the toilet. In the back area of the house I have another pad holder near our mudroom but she hardly ever uses it , she really only uses the one in the family room. At night she gets two fresh ones in her pen and I toss them in the morning . I use the odor blocker pee pads and we have never had a problem with odor. My dh can smell anything and he would complain if he could smell anything so I make sure to change them often , I don't want my home to smell  she also doesn't seem to like to go on it after more than 1-2 small pees  So I toss it. ( We have a can out back and the trash gets taken daily so no smell :)) I thought about washable , but this seems to be working for now. I also use a sturdy raised potty pad holder which helps her keep her pee in the middle of the pad . She would go towards the edge before we got the raised holder. |

We have a pan from a kennel that might work and I will give it a try, but then again, she might just get scared by the evil pan; and neither of our Yorkies likes to go when you are watching (Daisy is the worst and needs to be closed in for her to go). Animals get scared of the silliest things sometimes, and my Yorkies are very peculiar under certain situations! I like to think it has something to do with their ping-pong-ball sized brains:rolleyes: |
Wow. I share all your experiences; especially the peeing on the edge. Everyone always comments about boys lifting their legs, but my girls lift their legs and pee on the edge of a pee pad. As puppies, I start from day one with paper pee pads....when puppies get to about 6 weeks old--they use the paper pads for tug of war--then we switch to the washable pads. We have several washable pads out in the house. Some of the dogs use both the pads in the house and go out the doggie door. A few never go outside. We change the pads as needed. Pick up poop as we see it and flush it away. and we stilll have 10 boxes for future litters, lol. |
We are training ours using pee pads but as soon as we get distracted, she starts playing with them... |
i have a very stong sesne of smell and would HAVE to change it every time it was soiled!! why not use freebie papers and walmart or similar bags when they use it toss the papers in the bags tie them up in the garbage they go free and easy lesss mess ans stinkyness also use a baby gate in a smaller room maybe instead of a bigger area to confine it?? |
