Pee Pads in the house Hello, I am interested in getting a little yorkie. Its fairly chilly right now... so Im considering training her to go on Pee pads in the house, silly question for those whos yorkies go on pee pads, does it make the house smell?? I live in a condo, so I dont have a back mud room or anything like that to put the piddle pads in, I was just going to put in the kitchen area that has no carpet! How often do you change them? Another silly question... what do you do with them once changed... My garbage area is down at the other side of the building so I could take it down there once a day. Thanks for the help!! |

Can't wait to see your new baby |
Hi, I know all about the chilly weather too, I'm way up in northern BC. I decided to train Bea to pads due to the cold and I take her to work with me and it was more convienient that way. I just have the pad at home by the front door and the one at work at the back of the store. I tend to change the pads daily so her feet don't get dirty, just throw the pads out with the garbage. I flush the poo down the toilet. As long as you change the pads regularly they don't seem to smell. I think they put something in them to stop odors. Also I keep the pads on hard floor, it helped when she was a puppy so she didn't confuse carpet with the pad. Can't wait till spring when she goes outside again! |

My puppy is only inside for now till the weather gets better. He is doing really well on the pee pads and the others learn from him... :) |
mine goes excellent on the pee pads,it doesnt smell but everytime she goes poo i pick it up with the tissue paper and flush it |
1 Attachment(s) I have a super sensitive nose and can smell a wet pee pad. Lady also won't use the same pad twice so I change them every time she goes. I use washable pads now, but when I was using disposables, I got a Diaper Genie to hold the pads so they wouldn't smell. I got this cute cover on Ebay. |

My husband has a very sensitive nose and can smell it, even though the pee pads are in our mud room. Is there something you can recommend to mask the odor? I do use Febreeze spray and plug-ins. Maybe using a specific scent? Pam |

I use potty pads with Harley and I can't smell them at all. Now that he doesn't go so often (he is 7.5 months) I put down a fresh pad every morning. When he was younger, I would usually change it twice a day. I too flush any poop and just take the pad out to the trash with the normal household trash. I have been looking into washable pads, but have only seen the ones they sell at PetSmart in person and those seem awful rough to me! Jeri and Harley:aimeeyork |
The diaper genie is a great idea!! Saves me running down the hall all the time! lol That would make it easier to change it more than once a day too. Awesome!! I can't do febreeze... because I also have birds... and its toxic for them. |
You should get washable pee pads Little Bit sales them Blue Sky Yorkies | Lots of Love in a Little Package here is her website! HTH |
I use both. She likes going outside, because she likes to scanvenger around. But when I just forget to take her out, or she decides to pee or poop outside her scheduled time, she knows to go on the pad. I don't find a smell to it as long as you change it every other day or so. Sometimes, we leave them there up to a week and I don't find a smelly odor due to the urine, I do take away her poop off the pad once I realize it is there, though. |
you can buy the washable pads on eBay in lots, which saves money. |

I change them if there is more than 1 wee wee spot, as mine don't like to use a soiled pad! LOL! I also use 1 pad for each (I have 2 babies) cuz they don't care to share the same potty place!:yorkiesar |
Dang, with 4 of them, I would be broke if I had to change them everytime one of them peed on them. I would probably go through 30 a day. My oldest one was funny at first about having to share a pee pad, but, she has learned now they are to share! The ones I use are great, they can pee about 10 times on one before I have to change it out. The ones from Walmart, i was changing out about 6-7 times a day, compared to 2 or 3 times on these |
I have 2 girls that are 11 weeks old and they pee a lot & poo a lot since I am gone all day to work. I just put the soiled pads in a Wal-mart sack or other grocery sack and throw them in the trash. I change their pad in the morning and at night in their play pen and I keep a few in different rooms in the house that I change as needed & they miss a lot since they are so young. I pick up the poo and flush it. This is off topic, but does anyone's yorkie play with & eat their poo? They break them apart & leave little pieces all over the place! GROSS!!!! :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

Dogs eat poop for a variety of reasons, yours are still really young, and it wasn't that long ago when they mom was licking the poop off them to keep them clean. There are several things you can put in poop to make it unappetizing to them, for example pineapple, but at this age they may be playing with it more than eating it. Some people say that you might want to look at the dog food you're feeding, some have easier to digest proteins than others, and poop eating sometimes means too much protein is left in the poop, so the dog has another go at it. Pineapple works by helping to digest the protein. |
I usually change mine once a day with my three babies.I only wish I would have saved my diaper genie I used to use for my kids. Great idea.:lightbulb I pick the poop up with a tissue and flush it right away. I also use plug ins and so far been ok. I didn't know you couldn't use febreze with birds, I have two parakeets. I use it all the time. I've used it even before I had the furbies. No problems I'll be more careful now that I know. :aimeeyorkCOCO :aimeeyorkPEBBLES :aimeeyorkTRIXIE |
Take a kleenex, pick the poo off and flush it and roll up the soiled pad and put it in a plastic newspaper wrapper or a doggie bag and toss in the trash. You won't smell it. I'm not crazy about using the washer and the ele. and water and all just to wash those washable pads. That would be costly considering you wouldn't even have a full load and if you did, boy would that smell up the house. |
I, personally, think it's sooo wasteful to change the disposable pee pads EVERY time it gets peed on once. That's A LOT of pee pads to go through. I change mine daily. I keep mine on the kitchen floor & then one in Lilly's room & one in our bedroom (where she stays when I leave). I rarely smell them. I've been meaning to see how much a diaper genie is because it stinks sooo bad if you put them in the garbage & don't take it out right away. When she poops, I pick the poo up & flush it down the toilet right away. I'm very specific about how clean my house is and I didn't know if I was going to be able to deal with the pads but I think they're so convenient and you really can't smell them if you pick them up daily. |
I purchase the pads used for human beds at Sam's. They're 24" x 36"; there are 15 to a pack, and 8 packs to the box (120 total). I think they cost something like $32.00 ... I have the two Yorkies, and my grandson's 15 lb. Westie. All go outside when they can, but will use the pad if no one notices they want out. I have one by the back door and one in my bedroom. Solids get picked up and flushed; unless the pads get soaked, they're changed daily. Sometimes they won't use the one in my bedroom for days ... it's there for nightime convenience, or so I can sleep a little later on weekends. I fold them over and roll them up. My trash gets dumped daily, so I've never noticed a problem with odor. They have a ready supply of water, so their urine is never strong. It works for us! |
