| This has been bothering me for two days There's no "answer" to this one except of course, don't buy puppies from anyone but a good breeder...... Ok that being said, here is the story.....My daughter had moved and taken Mika to ATL., and I was missing having a yorkie. On a whim I talked a girlfriend of mine into going to Puppy Corral with me (the sister store of Arky Bark where I had bought Mika). There was this most darling yorkie there, but I left her and went home, couldn't sleep, had to have her, went back the next day and bought her. Side Bar: I was also under contract with my cousin in Chicago to help find a baby for her daughter for Xmas. Almost immediately after bringing her home I knew that Kaya was not the one for me, but the perfect one for Rachel. SO I called and told them about her, and then spent the next couple of weeks prior to Thanksgiving (when they were coming from Chicago to come get her) working on potty training, getting rid of ear mites, and a nasty kennel cough...(and this is a dog you paid 2,200.00 for). By the time they came to get her, she was pretty straight, and had potty training down pat. So it is a year later, and they excitedly brought Kaya by to meet Maya. (they are home for thanksgiving again). I couldn't wait until they pulled her out of the carrier, and when they did, I was in shock. This adorable adorable puppy has turned into something that bears little resemblance to a yorkie. Everything about her is well...just awful....her hair, her face, her eyes, her body formation, her ears, you name it. She looks like a cross between yoda and an airdale, silky. or something. My cousin looked at Maya running around and wanted to know why I drove all the way to Oklahoma to get MY yorkie. Why didn't I buy her from the same place Kaya came from. I was so hurt that this very expensive dog turned out this way. I learned my lesson way too late for it to help someone else who I got into this mess. Ok you may beat me up now, but it is no worse than I have already done to myself. (I had picked Maya out this adorable dress to wear to dinner, but I'm not taking her now.) By the way, this is Kaya when she was little.

| perhaps you should buy her a "real" yorkie? I mean, she asked for your help and she spent a lot of money and she trusted you... that being said... why was it bothering you for two days? Does she love the dog?

No Longer a Member | It is not as if you gave the dog with malicious intent. You made a mistake. It happens. You know better now and as long as they love Kaya then that is all that matters right? It seems as if her appearance only bothers you and not your cousin. It may be best to come clean about what you learned about getting puppies from a puppy store maybe that is where the residual guilt is coming from. In the end you sent them a practically potty trained and healthy puppy who they love now, so it all worked out. |

Ooooooooooo lord...... First of all, I can't buy a paper clip much less another yorkie... ...and asnwer to question #2...you'd have to a. know my cousin and how she is/who she is b. know some family history c. know her mother and how she is as well. But here is the heart of what bothers me about it...first of all nothing that you guys don't already know..these "pet stores" shouldn't keep getting away with this mess (and yes I NOW know not to patronize them). Secondly....I don't want my cousin to somehow think that I did this on purpose....you know got myself the 'pretty' one, and got her the dud. Although that is what happened, it was by no means some evil get even plot on my part. I promise.

No it is not just me that the appearance bothers, because she spent the time here asking me about grooming and top knots and different ways to make her a "proper yorkie." I guess since I had three before Maya they considered me some kind of "expert", and as you can see I am far from that. Ok I am SURE they love her, especially the little girl, but knowing my cousin as I do, she didn't spend that kind of money to expect that result, she wanted the whole 9 and the bragging rights to go with it.

ALso I'm sure they wouldn't just "dump" Kaya for another puppy, and there is NO WAY my cousin is taking on a second yorkie. Then what would that solve if they had one cute one, it would only serve for people to look at Kaya and say....so you have a yorkie, and what is the other one... With my cousin, it's all about status and appearance....you'd have to know her.

| One thing I have learned in the past few years is that yorkies are like a box of chocolate. You never know what you are getting. Believe me, I know. Every dog I have with the exception of one has come from well thought of show kennels. They are all as different as night is from day and none have turned out like I thought they would with the background they have. |

Gah, for $2,200 not only should the pup have been perfectly healthy, it should pick up cable and record your favorite TV shows while you're at work. Yeesh... That sucks that the dog didn't turn out looking like you thought it would. This is a bit of a retrospective question, but why didn't you consider getting a puppy out of the newspaper classifieds? That way you would have been able to see the parents if you liked, and you would have some idea of what the dog would grow up to look/act like...and it would have been a lot cheaper. I know lots of people here don't approve of backyard breeders, but almost all of my dogs came from BYB and I have never had a single health/congenital behavior issue with any of them. They've all been unregistered purebred dogs, conformationally sound (though not perfect) and all less than $400. Seeing as you weren't looking for a show quality pup anyway, seems like a well-scrutinized BYB could have gotten you a good-looking pup far cheaper than a pet store would. And in better physical shape, too. Did the pet store give you a health guarantee? I bought my pup for $350 bucks out of some country housewife's living room, and the vet says he's healthy as a horse. No medications, no Nutracal, nothing. He's not show quality but he has solid conformation, and since I got to see the father, I have a pretty good idea what he's going to look like as an adult too. He came with pre-registration, a health guarantee, and preliminary housetraining. I don't blame your cousin really. If I paid $2,200 for a purebred dog and it ending up not looking like the breed I wanted, I would be pretty angry. All that aside, I'm sure the dog is a wonderful pet. | |

| Although, it is always better to buy from a place where you can see the parents....you cannot continue to beat yourself up over this. Unless you can see into the future, you had no way of knowing how this pup was going to look. As long as they love her and are providing her a good home..give yourself a break. You know you are not a bad malicious person and so does your cousin, I'm sure. But, I do understand what you are going through, I have family just like that.... Good luck and try to have a wonderful THANKSGIVING!!!

| Nothing againist you, as I think you have learned your lesson about buying a puppy from a puppy store, but what I don't understand is: You can pick up a paper at any given time and locate a breeder (now, I'm not saying that everything in the paper is good) but you usually have many to pick from, you can spend the day and go from house to house and find a decent dog, why on earth would youor anyone else buy from a puppy store, you can't even see the mother, let alone both parents and the siblings.. I breed, and usually have 1 litter a year, I am lucky as many of my puppy parents are repeat buyers or recommend me to someone and I have always sold my puppies to the best of homes. I sell my girls for $1000 and my boys for $750. They are all healthy and are 100% AKC yorkies. Yet people will go into a puppy store and pay these crazy prices for a dog they have no information on. If you cousin loves her dog and she never brought up the fact that both girls look completley different, I wouldn't worry about it. I guess I have one question: Why did you decide after you brought the 1st puppy home that she wasn't for you? What was that trigger? And why didn't you just bring her back. $2200. for a dog with ear mites and kennel cough? Doesn't that seem a bit high and outrageous!

And secondly, I would think that too... no offense---but I'd be really ticked off. However, all you can do is be honest with her and tell her that there was no ill intent on your part... can you make her look cute? Like outfits, bows, grow the hair?
