There are a profusion of words and phrases used for dogs that are not purebred. The words cur, tyke, mutt and mongrel are used, but are either derogatory, or have derogatory meanings according the the Oxford English Dictionary. Despite this, in the United Kingdom mongrel is the unique technical word for a mixed-breed dog, and is often not used as a term of disparagement. North American owners generally prefer mix or mixed-breed. Mutt is also used (in the U.S.A and Canada), and can be used in an affectionate manner.

If the word 'mutt' is offensive to you, don't respond to it. If others follow suit then its safe to say that it won't be used anymore or it won't bother you or anyone else anymore. Its not a matter of EVERYONE being PC... its a matter of picking your battles. An online forum is a nice place to go and escape the 'real world' around you, but not a place to get so worked up about an issue that someone you don't know personally posted about, just ignore it and enjoy the rest of the site, members, pics and posts! Mixed breed, mutt, purebred, yorkie, nonyorkie, everyone is welcome to post here! All questions/comments/information and fun posts are appreciated, welcomed and loved by a majority of the members! Please don't feel the need to leave!!

| I just want to say, I love YT and SO many people here have helped me and my dogs AND I think I have done the same. I found YT when I adopted Ella Bean, as she was super sick and I needed help! I knew she was part Yorkie and thats why I started posting. I have made wonderful friends. I ignore people who try and instigate fights and there does seem to be major controversy over mixed breeds, but I say, IGNORE it. Too many good people on here. Don't let anyone ruin your time here. Everyone is welcome and I feel strongly that keeping a positive attitude, no matter WHO says WHAT...or what words they use...is the strongest way to express our disdain for those who are argumentative. As for the word 'mutt' just reclaim it and use it in affection and ignore those who use it negatively. While it may be 'correct' it DOES hurt some people's feelings and I hope they will ignore the posters who seem to enjoy hurting their feelings!

or "why do people continue to buy mixes" etc, etc and it turns into a debate making the OP defending themselves as to why the got the dog in the first place, making them feel very unwelcome, Ive seen it over and over again, in just the few short 2 months Ive been here.

I, for one, think crossbreeds are adorable, interesting, and a time-tested method of coming up with "new breeds"... People continue to buy mixes because crossbreeds are always the first step to a new breed. Sure, the first generations of that cross are going to be unpredictable in size/coat/etc...but that's because they're first and second generation experiments. I'm sure the first yorkie "crossbreed" ancestors looked *nothing* like the Yorkshire Terrier of today's standard. Dogs are mixed because people like the combination of qualities that crossbreeds afford. It's not always just to make money. And there are plenty of people who breed purebred dogs for profit as well. So since all dogs are essentially "mutts" and "mongrels", there's no reason to get up on a high horse about breed standards. Today's Shorkie is tomorrow's "Baltimore Terrier"....or whatever. | |

When people stick their nose into my posts and provoke me to defend my dog instead of answering the thread, I ignore it. I am not saying I don't WANT to respond (with a swift kick!) but its not worth it. The other advice and people are too awesome to let those jerks ruin it. When those debates arise in mid - thread, I suggest politely re-asking your question and ask to return to the subject!

It just shows that the instigators of these arguments are wasting their time and energy making people feel bad for no reason. Ignore 'em.

| I call all mine MUTTS!! Muffys name tag says Muffy MUTT. The only one that doesnt like it is my lab. He hates to be called a Mutt. LOL It is funny cause you can ask him if he is a mutt and he will start sneezing and shaking his head. I feel that if you come to a place like this everyone is going to have an opinion. If you dont like there opinion then skip that one and go on to the next one. If you ask for an opinion I dont see how you can get so upset. As for asking how much a dog is going to weigh think of it like this, your parents didnt know how big you were going to be so how is someone that has never seen your dog going to tell you how much your dog will weigh. Dogs grow differently everyone knows that just look at YT There are dogs from 2 pounds to 20 pounds and they are all the same breed. Just my 2 cents !!

| I also found the other thread suggesting segregating Yorkies & mixes offensive and hurtful. Yet after searching that OP's previous posts and finding that she owns a Maltese and a Rotweiler, and NO Yorkies, and she was expecting to get flamed, I decided not to go there. I wasn't surprised to see the thread closed this morning. Another flame out mixed breed thread in August, made me avoid posting for 2 months. But I kept reading, and am better at spotting the hot buttons and avoiding them. My Yorkie and Morkie are best buddies, and I can hardly mention one without the other. It is absurd to think that I'd have to only talk about Tiki in a Yorkie section, and Meika in another section. Imaging how hard the moderators would have to work to keep them all segregated. But to all the rest of you who have taught me practically everything I know about Yorkies and Morkies, I say THANK YOU. It has been so fun coming here and seeing pictures and hearing stories. And to the YT Angels that have been helping me with Tiki's health issues, thanks just isn't nearly enough to say. Big Hugs to You ALL!

| Mutt is just a description of a dog . All dogs come from mixing something together , so no big deal. I have a "mutt" and a "pure" Yorkie , I love them both and don't value one over the other. Just try and not to read to much into a post. More often than not intent doesn't come across in a post. Such as the example someone gave..."How big will my Morkie get?" If someone post and says, "no one knows because its a mutt." They may be sitting behind their computer with absolutely no ill will toward your dog or the word mutt , but when you read it you see " It's a mutt , lesser than my dog , and your not worthy to be here." So try not to take most things in a bad way. The post that are obviously mean , that's another story |
