| Dew claws Sam has his dew claws and I am curious what your opnions on removal are. I have always been told to remove them to reduce the risk of them being accidentaly ripped off. He is 5 and has made it this far with out issues.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | At 5 years old...I"d be inclined to leave them alone. Just be sure to clip them when his other nails are trimmed.

| We get our puppies removed 3-5 days depending on the size of puppy - I like day 4. After that age you need to put the dog under to remove the dewclaw. My husbands parents dog needed hers done around 2 years due to constant ripping of them. She took it really hard. I wouldn't remove on an adult unless there was a problem.

| Sapphire had hers removed before we got her, so I can't help much on this topic. Sorry. But I'd say if they're doing fine then let it be.

| It is an actual surgery once they are older and need to be put under. She was very woosy after and depressed for a couple of days. They had bandages around them to keep her from it and she ripped it off one and licked the stiches until they bled. They had to take her back in to the vet...glued it this time...rebandaged and put something on the bandage to keep her away from it. Something like bitter apple I am guessing?

| Katy had to have one that started to grow back and inward removed when she was under for her spay. She gets the stitches out tomorrow. She had to wear the dreaded cone on her head so she wouldn't chew on them. I will be glad to get that off. I didn't realize they sometimes can grow back. |

| If we do remove them I would wait until he had to go under anesthesia for something else. I try to avoid anesthesia if at all possible. I really dont know what to do. They dont bother him but I would hate to have one get ripped off. I can see it would be a hard recovery because of the licking accessablity. I have never heard of them growing back.

i had the vet take if off when milu was getting spayed. i didn't make the decision, i just threw it at the vet and said "do what you think is best, because i have no idea" so the vet removed it. i did some research after wards....and it seems like it's more painful for them than the spay surgery, because you are cutting off a 'bone' so...if i had known that, then maybe i would have told the vet not to do it...but milu did fine after the removal. she tried to chew on the stitches, so you will have to watch them to make sure they don't hurt themselves. let me know if you have anymore questions that i can help you with.

| I had no idea they removed bone. That helps me make the decision. I guess if he made it this long without ripping one of he's probably not going to.

YT 500 Club Member | Sophie still has hers (age 7), and one seems to bother her more than the other. Our vet said that she preferred not to remove them at this age because it would be like removing a thumb. She said at that age it is amputation.
