Default Stop The YORKIE WEIGHT Wars!

I have a pretty small Yorkie at 3.5 pounds. I was in Saks the other day and another lady had her Yorkie who is at least 14 pounds. We talked, I have seen this lady many times before with her dog who is 11 months old and he is such a sweet dog with the cutest face. Of course people are approaching us because we are in the store with two simply adorable yorkies.

One lady approaches us and asked the other lady if her dog is a Yorkie or a Silky, she answers it is a Yorkie. Then she proceeds to say and I quote, "You see these little yorkies all around here but really they are suppossed to be 12-16 pounds. My yorkie is a true yorkie" She says this while I am still standing right next to her with my "little yorkie"!!! How rude! As if to say my dog is any less a Yorkshire Terrier than hers!

And, if I am not mistaken, the breed standard says 4-7 pounds or maybe 3-6 pounds I forget, but I know it wasn't over that because they say Yorkies are the smallest in the toy breed.

Cant we all just love our Yorkies? Why the weight wars.

I dont care if your Yorkie is a handful or hes so big he cant fit on your lap correctly, as long as he is healthy and happy he should be loved by everyone

Okay thanks for letting me vent....

Why expect tact from strangers who will say worse about your skin kids if you will listen long enough???

I have the opposite issue. Aiden is 9 moth old and around 15 lbs. My uncles Yorkie ,Maggie is about 3-4 lbs. He tells me Aiden is not a Yorkie. He's a "cross breed" I truely dont care wha he is. I bought him with papers and I don't plan on registering him,my choice. I just know I love him,and the vet says he's healthy, and he's very active and I agree. Even us humans are suppose to weigh a certain amount according the a height chart...but we don't...are we not humans..PLEASE ..Get over it people. As long as we are happy ..leave it alone.

Thats an unusual reaction because most people say the bigger yorkies are not yorkies but sikies. Maybe she was just on the defensive because her yorkie is so large. Anyway the standard is 7 lbs and under

Thats mean, and I agree with everything you said, excellent point about the human weight, LOL! All Yorkies are technically "Cross breeds" anyway because the ancestors of the yorkies were different terriers bred to get the yorkie.

Love your yorkie with all your heart and me and milo send extra big kissess his way!

The breed standard is under 7 pounds...there is no minimum.

That was really rude of her....I can't believe she would say that right in front of you. (Then again, I can't believe you were both allowed in Saks with dogs to begin with.)
You should have said, "yes, you run accross these smaller ones almost as much as you run accross owners who don't know what they are talking about."

All Saks allows dogs in their facilities. I shop there all the time and I am a makeup artist so sometimes I work there too and you will see dogs of all shapes and sizes shopping with their mums. I always have him in a carrier, but there are plenty of people who have them in strollers, or just on leashes walking around. I love it, it reminds me of Germany were I grew up, you can bring your dog everywhere there.

I think the lady was just answering the question, and not being disrespectful of you. New members often ask the question is their dog a real Yorkie, because he's so big, and people explain that Yorkies were once a bigger breed. A dog by the name of Huddersfield Ben is thought to be responsible for producing most of the foundation stock of the Yorkshire terrier, in the 1860's. Although he was 12 pounds he was the first to breed true to type Yorkshire terriers that were under the 7-pound limit.

By the way the standard says 7 pounds and under. I don't think Yorkies are the smallest of the toy breeds, I would think Chihuahuas are the smallest, but I'm not sure of this.

LMAO at your edit!

When I told my boyfriend about it he was like why didn't you correct her. But I was like, why waste my time. But now I do wish I would have said something, but I was in shock. How dare you diss my Yorkie!?

The standard is 4-7 lbs, Many years ago, yorkshire terriers were bigger, but that was like I said, many years ago. There are bigger ones and smaller ones, and everything in between. But one thing is for sure, we all LOVE OUR YORKIES. You need to try to let these peoples comments fly over your shoulder. I don't think they mean anything by it, they just feel the need to comment. If people were more informed, then we wouldn't have these problems.

Wrong. Actually, the standard is "not to exceed 7 pounds"...there is no 4 pound minimum.

Default My girl...

Allie is a small girl, she only weighs 4 lbs., but I love her just the same.

I know what the standard says but there are going to be bigger and smaller dogs, it just happens. Since they are all Yorkies, I think that it is silly to get into a discussion about size and weight.

This type of thing goes on in the Japanese Chin world all of the time, with breeders going back and forth about size and weight all of the time. It really gets to be boring because they are all Chin. Kali is a larger Chin at 8 lbs, but she is healthy and happy. When it comes to Chin, I'd rather have a larger one, you don't have to worry about low blood sugar as much with them. Plus they were larger to begin with, breeders started to prefer the smaller dogs and began breeding to that specification. It seems to me to basically make them smaller like Yorkies because of the history of the breed. Well, as I said, I am very happy that Kali is a larger Chin, I wouldn't have it any other way. She's small enough that she's still a toy, but large enough to put up with a three year old that loves to carry the dogs around. In that vein, my Chi mix is a little larger too, but she's still only 7 lbs.

Allie probably would be happier if she was a little bigger. That way my daughter wouldn't carry her around like a stuffed animal all of the time lol.

I don't think size and weight matters. If there were larger dogs years ago, it stands to reason that there will be some larger Yorkies now.

She might have been defensive because her Yorkie is a little bigger and she secretly envies those of us with the smaller ones lol.

I love my "purse" baby Allie, I wouldn't have her be any larger, but if she was, I'd love her just the same. I think as long as the Yorkie has the right coloring, personality and temperment, then what does it matter how big they are?

Sorry for the long post, just my two cents.
