I did too. I learned if you voice an opinion here which is even the slightest bit controversial, you better be prepared to defend yourself from strangers more concerned with your animal's feelings than they are with yours...

Wow- a lot happended over the night! I think everything I want to say has already been said, aside from one thought.

I know I can only speak for myself, but I will be the first to admit- I absolutely care more about the animal's feelings than I do a stranger's feelings... sorry, but it's true. These guys can't speak for themselves. We are their voices, and it sucks to know certain animals have pretty crappy ones, by default of their owners.

I know I can only speak for myself, but I will be the first to admit- I absolutely care more about the animal's feelings than I do a stranger's feelings... sorry, but it's true. I don't have a problem for people feeling more strongly for animals than they do for people, and I agree with the anti-puppy miller people, I just think taking a self-righteous "Well obviously you don't care about the feelings of the animals!" tone whenever a person tries to educate someone else on something they feel strongly about is a really lowbrow way of handling the situation. You see this attitude all the time concerning religion. Or animal rights. Or politics.

I think it's kind of dumb that this drama sprang up because people are proud of being "brutally honest" to the point of disregarding tact. You might be right, but being right doesn't give you the right to be rude to someone you don't even know. Maybe there are some well-intentioned people who did not mean to be offensive towards the OP, but that's how it came across to me.

And apparently to her as well.

Many people on here are very loving and sensitive to animals they feel have behavioral problems. They should be loving and sensitive to the human animals they have problems with too.

I think if we had this discussion in a year or two several of you would be on the other side.

Many of the newer members may not have any idea how many pups the longtime members that you're criticizing have saved from pain or illness. Or how many owners they've saved from heartbreak. The fact is that Nicole (TLC) and others post because they DO care. They knew that they were saying something that the OP in the original thread didn't want to hear, and knew that they would be accused of harassing her by some. (Unfortunately this is not their first rodeo...) But they posted anyway despite her defensive tone. It was in her best interest as well as the pups that she have all the info going in. And how could their tone have been self righteous if they've been in the same position? They were just sharing their hard won wisdom. I'm sure they wish that they had been given that same information thousands of dollars and buckets of tears ago.

I'm sure that they DO get tired of people REFUSING to listen or acknowlege what they are saying with a tirade of "I know better than you..." But they don't throw fits and threaten to quit because they know how important it is to keep posting and to help those who need it. That's what's YT's about.... sharing knowledge and a common bond: love for our babies! I can say this much... without knowing any of them in person, there are countless YT members I would trust with Jamie if the situation arose because I can tell by their posts that they care as much about my baby and ALL animals as much as they care about their own. Unfortunately, I can't say that about the OP in the original thread.

I would be as passionate as necessary to keep someone from jumping off a bridge whether they liked it or not. This situation isn't much different. So let's cut those who provide us all with so much knowledge a break...

I went back and read all the info and learned some things myself love this place -- how many puppies does a commercial breeder have to produce to be a usda breeder? sorry if this was answered but i am just curious

I would have welcomed all that info myself after going through what i have gone through. It really is so tough though as over the past 4 years i have met many people on yorkie groups including this one and have become friends and we talk and the sad thing is i know some that have pups from reputable show breeders that have paid $3,000 and they ended up having liver shunt and 25% use of kidney and she thought she was getting a good quality show dog I met another one who researched for a year to find the best breeder and paid top dollar and her pup has bladder stones and liver disease and she has been through the ringer, and then my own experiences i have shared. It is so hard to know but all you can do is try to do your best to do your homework and prepare for the worst and hope for the best and try to go to the best breeder you can find through recommendations from others.

I really thought in reading the posts that people were trying to help her and inform her and ultimately she needed to make the best decision for herself but i welcome any information myself but ultimately i will make the decision myself and deal with the consequences as i have with mine.

When you deal with sick ones you become very passionate about warning others of things because you know the heartache from your own experiences and from reading about others on the groups you are on. If you have been blessed with healthy ones then that is great but those that have not become very passionate and are constantly trying to read and educate on groups such as yahoo groups to help their babies and in doing so learn a ton and see alot of sad stories that others may not and it is great when they can share with others to help them with what they have learned and forewarn the ones that could be entering into that arena. I myself am on the groups for mostly that reason as i want to help others in the areas i have learned alot on so that they may not have to endure the financial and emotional heartache we have with ours.

I love that all of us can learn from each other and am thankful to those that have taught me some things I did not know.

Just sad that she was so offended as I think the intentions on that thread really were meant to inform her as she seemed to do good research herself but others were bringing up some good points too.

VERY well said!! I've been VERY riled up over a few threads in the last few days, as I know many of us have!! And normally it doesn't get to me, but to see the way some people are talking to other, longstanding members who I RESPECT and do nothing but good, ticks me off to no end. I have to say, I'm in with TLC and a few of the others like me, who are NOT afraid to say what they feel.. NO SUGAR ADDED!!

SO..... I'm off to the SoCal YT meetup now!! I'm going to enjoy other members and our Yorkies!! (The reason we are here remember??)

I don't know of any pet store that doesn't purchase from a large scale commercial breeder or mill. I believe that pet shops must purchase from a USDA breeder and those are usually larger operations.

As a side note not related to your question --

What I think is so challenging is that even with small breeders you never really know if they are just as bad as a mill. Even though a breeder may not be a large operation, the care of the animal may not always be the best and thought may not be given to the pairings of the dogs there. I think many also fall into the trap that because a breeder is small, they are "good" breeders which is unfortunately untrue.

What the entire situation comes down to (for me) is that it's the ethics behind the entire situation. I think that the way animals both farm and companion are treated is a direct reflection of greed and product demand. And what is worse is you will *never* hear a pet store being up front and honest about where these pups come from.

I'm going off on a tangent here, lol. But as much as I think it's important to educate others, I think there's a fine line to walk when trying to discuss the issues and trying to persuade someone not to buy from a pet shop. In the end pushing personal beliefs on others will never accomplish the true goal which is really education.

Ok I am going to yield to you guys on this issue... really I was just asking a hypothetical....but I get it...Breeder (good 0nes), and Pet store don't mix/jive.

Oprah does a couple shows to bring awareness about puppy mills, and she is considered the enlightened hero. Yet some YT members with as much passion and experience try to bring awareness to people who may not know better and they are criticized. Go figure
