I just read the whole thread and unfortunately do not agree with all of you. I don't think anybody was attacking her. I think that everyone was doing their best to point out facts that are important for all buyers to know.

I agree completely with all of the "controversial" posts. I've been around here for a while and I know these members. They are knowledgeable, KIND and HELPFUL members. I don't believe for a second that they were trying to be hurtful or malicious, and I don't think it's fair that they are being attacked for being concerned for not only the health and safety of the puppy, but also the buyer! Just because someone tells you something they don't want to hear does not make them a mean or bad person.

I'm sorry but that's what you get when you publicly ask for advice. Take it or leave it.

YT is a wonderful place and I have gained an immense amount of information from those controversial posters. I owe them a lot and I'm always eager to learn from them, even if what they have to say is not what I want to hear. This forum is about YORKIES, I don't understand why drama is always being stirred up. :thumbdown

I don't believe in brutal honesty any more than I believe in brutal training. Hypothetically, I may beat my dog with the intentions to make him into a well-behaved canine citizen, but "good intentions" don't justify my actions.

I believe if a person can't give constructive criticism in a way which does not make them come across as a holier-than-thou know-it-all, they shouldn't say anything...

It's not their opinions I take issue with (which I agree with) it's their condescending tone. Just because one person is an activist for animal rights doesn't mean they need to shove other people's faces in it when their original question has absolutely nothing to do with what they're being criticized about. That's like me walking up to someone in a deli line saying, "Have you had this turkey sandwich before?" and them replying, "Ugh, you eat mutilated animal corpses? Don't you know what terrible things they do to those animals, how terrible it is for you, blah blah blah blah..."

By the time that person gets really raving, the person who asked the question is already pissed off and is not going to listen to your opinion anyway. So it's a really bad way to give good advice.

She did not ask advice about where to get the puppy. She only asked which one posters thought she should buy. That's it.

Ask a simple question, get digitally caned by people insulting her intelligence and her intentions.

I don't blame her for leaving.

Some people take YT too seriously.

I can rememember when there was no more than 20 people posting - though I haven't been here as much lately (been sick (a little depressed) and working on Christmas cards)... plus working full time - I'd like to say is there are FAR MORE GOOD people than 'not so good'

remember - there's always varying opinions though personal attacks are wrong.....don't know what happened but maybe someone can talk to her and let her start fresh....

That has been my experience too. The kind, insightful, tactful people I've met here far outnumber those few who do get my back hair up. That's why I like it here. :)

Honestly, I think it's the nature of the beast (the internet, not the yorkie!). For better or worse, it's much easier to express your opinion on the web. Infighting happens on a lot of forums. In fact, the only forums I've seen where it doesn't happen is where the moderators militantly monitor all the treads.

I think some rules of thumb are:

1) When posting, try to be tactful.

2) When reading, stay relaxed. Even if someone posts something that seems like a personal attack, they don't really know you. It's easy to think you know someone on the web, but you are only seeing a tiny part of their personality.

3) Remember, it's much harder to convey tone in writing. This goes both ways. You may post something you think is neutral and find someone else takes offense to it -- or you may be offended by something that was not intended that way.

Easier said than done, I know. But hey, we're all training our yorkies, right? It's all about positive reinforcement. I'm so proud of everyone for posting here! You're doing such a great job! Have a cookie.

Not everybody on that thread attacked her for not being able to make a decision on which dog to adopt. Some people gave good advice and wanted her to be happy with the dog she wanted to adopt. Many people said that adopting a dog was a personal decision including me. Not everybody on the thread was mean. I feel like some people like me were overlooked on that thread. When I read the thread last night, I felt t that some people should have just given their suggestion and allowed her to make the final decision. I think we should just put this situation behind us and invite the person back to Yorkie Talk.

EVERYONE has a right to post whatever THEY want to talk about...and I just didn't agree with how that other thread went down...and since it was shut down before I could respond I decided to open my own Thread..if you don't like it...you don't have to come to this thread..

This thread wasn't started as MEAN...but it is a way for us other people to share our feelings on how some threads escalate to levels that is not helpful for anyone!
