When my fiance was first going to get me a yorkie, he went to petland..I really knew nothing about them at the time, and they claimed their dogs were from local breeders so we were starting to fall for it. Then one day he took me there and while I did fall for this really cute s**t-zu (sp?) puppy, I didn't have enough to buy her and I couldn't do anything w/ my credit bc we were about to close on our home. Now I know it was a blessing in disguise I didn't purchase from there. We went home and googled "petland" and OMG I was disgusted!!! Besides, if we did get a puppy from there, I wouldn't have Rocky and Bella with me today, and my life would definitly not be the same w/o them!

I just went into a Petland a week ago. You should've seen all the puppies they had in there. Makes me mad. I'm assuming they had so many in there because of the hoilday season. I actually seen a family purchasing a little boston terrier puppy. I was cringing. I have been into this same Petland before, this was while I was waiting for my puppy to be old enough to come home. She came from a breeder, not Petland. And there was a family in there at the time and they were purchasing a little yorkie, this was before I heard about all the awful things about Petland and their puppies. They were getting ready to pay for the puppy, but were having problems about what they were told it cost. One of the people working there told them the puppy was $1100, but it was actually $1700. And I do believe they still bought it, it was just a tiny thing, scared and just awww. It was sad. When i went in last week, they had yorkie puppies there, there was a girl looking at one, saying she wanted to get one. I thought it was my job to warn her and tell her she should go to a breeder instead. Hope she did just that. Now you're probably wondering why i was in there again since I now know what goes on there, well I'm from a lettle, lettle town and I went and got a diaper. I'm getting Tila spayed right quick here and this was just in case, I'm sorry don't yell at me for going in there I should and do know better.

i hate these kind of places and i feel so bad for the puppies.... they can't help it. its cruel money hungry people that just make me sick to my stomach.

last year at petland...i stood outside with a rescue team (we were trying to give homeless dogs homes) and showed pictures of where the puppies inside could have came from, health and behavioral issues that could arise later in life, and educated people on uncertified, backyard and puppymills.... people were amazed. we also encouraged spaying and neutering if they decided on getting a puppy... we didn't make much of a difference because of course the puppies inside are cuter and yada, but i felt like we educated people alot more on what actually goes on behind the scense of a franchise petstore.

I think that's really great! If I still lived in Canada I would go and do that too. Unfortunatly I have a bit of experience with Petland....

I moved in with my best friend last year. She had a cat and was going into Petland to get some cat toys. I'd never been into a Petland before, and when we went in I saw all the cute little puppies. I loved looking at them because they were so cute, but I just felt so bad for them all. A lot of them were sleepy and un healthy looking (runny eyes, diarreah on the bottom of the cages, etc) then some just looked like regular puppies wanting to play. My roommate was quite taken with one of the little miniature pincher/pomeranion crosses and started talking to the sales girl. I asked her where all of the puppies came from and if they came from a puppy mill. The girl said that they get all of their puppies from a single very reputable breeder and assured us it was not a puppy mill. Hmmm how could this single lady be breeding dozens of different dogs and providing a constant supply to Petland... Anyways, to make a long story short she ended up leaving that day with a $1400 puppy and all of the stuff to go along with it! We took her to the vet a few days later and she had loose knee caps and diarreah. Like many people I'm sure, She did not give serious thought whether or not her lifestyle would suit a puppy and how much work they actually are. I ended up begining to train and take care of it because she didn't want to get up at 4am to take it out to pee, and when she got home from work she was tired and didn't want to play with it. The poor puppy needed constant attention and had major seperation anxiety, and we both worked 8 hours a day. Anyways, she started to really regret her decision, and 2 weeks later when I went away for the weekend I called home to ask how the puppy was doing and she told me that she had actually returned it!!!!!!! In all honesty it was the best thing for the puppy because she was re-adopted/sold to another girl who had other dogs and was better equipped to take care of her. It just makes me so mad that these puppies aren't viewed as living animals with emotions and feelings, and that Petland even has a return policy on them. They are like a pair of shoes. Anyways, my friend ended up having to pay a small "boarding" fee basically a restocking fee and got most of her money back. 6 months later she got a new kitten from them - also ridiculously over priced at $1200 because it was some exotic breed she'd always liked. They told her it was a final sale because they knew she had returned an animal before....

Basically all of this happened before I was really aware of all the puppy mill issues, and I do not support them at all anymore, and would never ever recommend anyone buy from them. I'm also baffled by how so called Pet Lovers could even work at these stores because they see what goes on behind the scenes.

ughhh this morning on the same station I had heard the commercial on, they were doing contests on their morning show giving away $50 gift certificates.
I'm going to send them a message about petland and see if they at least mention it on tomorrows show or something.

I shop Petland near me - the prices are reasonable. I also buy my dog's food there. I did buy my yorkie from Petland. The store I shop is clean. The kennels weren't over crowed, clean, and the staff was educated in dog care/grooming. The store owners were a great help and when I took my pup for his check up they covered it. They also offered reference from previous clients. I know many are not for buying from these types of stores, but my dog needed a home and love too. I am blessed that I feel I have a great dog. I know I am biased because he's mine. I have seen dogs bought from breeders with behavioral issues. Part is the breeder and part is the owner. Afterall, if I didn't buy my dog, some one else would have or worse. Who is to say what is the right way or wrong way. You have to do what is right for you. JMO.

Also, the Petland I shop at does support our local children's charities. They also support local animal shelters. I wonder if that is because they are independently owned? Do all the stores do these types of things?

yes, seems like their presentation is great. thats exactly what they want you to think. what you don't know is the horrible illegal enviornment your puppy came from. most likely bred for the money. were glad you have and love your dog but take a couple mins and click on the links above and see where your dog could have game from and read about some of the 'interesting' things people do for money

It's great that your dog ended up being so wonderful, and there are some other YTers who later found out that their babies came from puppymills or they bought from pet stores not knowing about the problems with pet store puppies. I first learned about petland by coming across their website one day which makes them seem like angels. They have all kinds of info about how great their dogs are and charitable stuff they have a part in. But just like any other business, thats how they are marketing themselves. There aren't many business owners anymore that feel honesty is a virtue, they want to make as much money as possible.
The reason why most don't shop at petland is because of where they get their puppies from, just by spending money in there is still supporting their business.
