| Science diet, despite their popular name, is a very low quality dog food to put it lightly. The vets are paid to recommend this food, which is sad because I would like to think all vets have the animals health as their best interest not their pockts You can find lots of info on the net about dog nutrition! | To the OP, i am sorry to hear about your vet. I have run into a few that seem to know less than me. I am no vet, but I think all vets should know more about hpyoglycemia and dog nutrition! Next time a vet tells me I should feed science diet, I will ask them why and make them explain to me why its so great! |

| I don't think there's really anything "wrong with it" but it's just not "top quality". It's considered middle-of-the-road, I think. My toy poodle ate Science Diet his whole life (16 years) and for most of it was on one prescription type after another because of health issues (first to lose weight after being plumped up by my grandparents which caused LP issues and then later for heart issues). I don't think he suffered from the food but there's so much more information out there for us to learn and a lot of people here have done a lot of research into the better foods. Hope that answers your question a little but someone here could probably help you better. Edited..... I see someone did beat me to it. I knew someone would jump in and help you.

| My vet HAS tried explaining to me why he thinks it's so great and yet, it still doesn't seem right to me. This last time he tried to tell me that "all those internet sold foods" are always changing their formulas and claiming to be better than Science Diet but that Science Diet doesn't change their formulas for the worse. And the vet tech tried explaining why SD's corn ingredient is "not that bad" because it's a "good corn". HUH? That's when I told him we would have to agree to disagree because I will take the "human grade ingredients" that my food choice offers over the ingredients on the SD bag.

| Thanks DejaVu for that wonderful information! I just read over it all and was surprised by the grades that some of the foods received.

Funny, even the staff at Petland (the pet store I shop at) know that Science Diet isn't a great food, but a "nurse" at the vets office thinks it's great.

| well, i don't think it's a big deal that they recommend science diet. i don't think it's a good dog food, and i don't think vets should recommend it...but what i am trying to say is that even though i like my vet, i still don't listen to everything he says to do for my dog. i just think that not all vets specialize in yorkies and they are certainly not specialized in caring for MY DOG. i have the specialization for that! i am her mommy! and i also have this forum to seek for help whenever i run into issues with my baby. milu is almost 9 months old now and she still needs nutri-cal often since she is the pickiest eater i have ever met. my vet thinks that i should be very strict with her, therefore she will learn to eat what she is given. but i don't listen to him, because mommy instinct tells me that milu will starve if i listened to him.

Give the office girl a break, it's all she knows. Just like most people who originally thought Science Diet was a good food, she has just not taken the time to do the research. Although nutrition is a HUGE factor in the bottom line, the traumas and diseases they deal with on a daily basis are far more important in their minds. Their continuing education is in the newest levels of internal medicine (diseases and internal problems), surgery and treatments. Nutrition usually falls down on the list, and trust me, if you ever have an emergecy, you will be glad for the other stuff they are specialized in!! Bottom line is you do your research and do what's best for your baby. But a good relationship with a good vet is a true blessing. There are also really competent animal nutritionists out there who are well worth a consultation.

lolololol This is so true. Some techs are probably great but others think they went to vet school for four years.

| Ok, I just called my vet's office back because this was annoying me so much. I talked to a different lady who works in the back. I recognize her voice from her dealing with my Pug dog's dental surgery last year. She seems wonderful. Without telling her that I'd already called yesterday, I asked her all the same questions and got completely different answers. She said that it sounds like Missy definitely needs the Nutracal, and to continue giving it to her as long as she seems to need it. She also said that the food I am giving her now is fantastic and much better than Science Diet. I was *this* close to changing vet's today. I'd already gotten 3 recommendations for vet's to call this afternoon. After I had my chat with her, I told her about my experience yesterday. She said the lady that I was talking to was actually the office manager. She did NOT sound pleased. Anyways, now I can let it go. I'll quit bothering you guys with my rant
