SCREAMING at night...HELP!!!

Hiya guys, I really need your help with something. I got my 4 month old Yorkie bitch puppy last Sunday and she has started screaming at night, and I mean screaming! She sleeps in a box like this....

She's in there on her own with food and water and a chew. I also put in a hot watter bottle and plenty of blankets so she's warm. She's been in that box in our bedroom at night, but last night I tried puting her in her box downstairs in the kitchen only to be woken at 12am to her screeeeeaaaammmmmming! I dont know what to do! Help me please!

Has anybody got any suggetions to help her settle in her box at night?

I got my dogs shipped to me, and that looks like the kind of carrier they came in. Did you baby come in that or something similar? Maybe she's scared she's going to be put back on a plane? Could you get a crate that's more open? Less plastic, more metal so she can see out of it better?

my friend's puppy would scream like holy terror if she had any poo on her or if there was any pee/poo in her crate. it's a longshot, but thought i'd share in case your little one had an accident in the crate yesterday

Try putting a blanket over the front of the crate, worked wonders for all three of our pups.

When we got Bella, the first night we never heard a peep, but every night after she would WAIL!!!! We finally resorted to letting her sleep with us until we could make it to the weekend so we could work on it. These are things I learned from her:
1. She HATES not being in the same room as me....her wailing was millions of times worse when I had her crate in another room than when I had her in my bedroom. For awhile, she slept on the floor right next to my side of the bed.
2. She did not like the travel crate we had her in (similar to yours, but was soft with mesh for panels instead of the metal grill in the front)....when I got one of the metal "cage" looking crates, MUCH, MUCH better!
3. She got cold during the night, so sometimes she just needed her little body to be covered with a blanket....the floor is the coldest spot in the house (warm air rises)!
4. My scent is comforting to her.....putting the shirt I had worn that day (or the one my boyfriend had worn that day or both) helped her a lot! Now (she's 6 mo. old), she has figured out that she can jump into my thigh-high hamper, so she choosed to sleep on my dirty clothes all night, or any other time it's "nap time".
5. After all those needs were met, she knew that as long as she could elicit a response from me (and believe you me, she could go on for awhile--it was definitely a "who could outlast who" game), she would keep crying. Originally I would say Hush or No Ma'am, or I would put my hand down next to her to show her she wasn't alone. NONE of that worked. I literally had to go almost an entire night of completely ignoring her.....no speaking AND NO MOVING!! (if I moved around on the bed, she knew I was awake and would go on and on)....until she finally gave up! After that, I would have her whine for only a minute or 2, then even less, until not at all (probably 2 wks after my ignoring her night). Now, when the lights go out she gets in her bed (well, not her nice bed...her "bed", the hamper ). We can talk, whatever, and she's totally fine. As long as the lights are on, though, she thinks we're awake and wants to be with us.

I would say in the beginning, from everything I've heard and read about new puppies, Bella was an extreme case. I think she was probably spoiled a little by the breeder's daughter. Yours may be a lot like she was. Hopefully some if not all of those tips will help you!!! Learn from my mistakes !!!

I forgot, we did that too when she was still sleeping in her crate. Except, we couldn't cover it completely....just the top and sides. She needed to be able to see out the front!

Also, as soon as I got her potty trained, I started leaving her out in my bedroom at night. Before that when she was still in her crate, she would wake me up a couple of times every night needing to potty. Once I got her trained and was sure she would potty only on her pad and not the floor, we started leaving her out (easier for us! She's pad trained, though, not outside trained.) Now, I can tell she sleeps in my hamper all night long without getting up to potty.

I think she is scared and feels lonely. Why does she sleep downstairs away from you? You should let her sleep in your room at least next to your bed in a diff. crate, that one looks too enclosed. She is a baby, im sure she is scared

she probably woke up and was wondering where you were. because she used to sleep in the bedroom where you sleep. can't she sleep in the bedroom again? i wouldn't recommend letting her on your bed though, because after i let milu sleep on the bed, there is no going back, now she won't sleep in her crate anymore.

if she can't sleep in the bedroom for some reason, at least give her something with your scent on it. but i hope she can sleep in the bedroom as well.

So, when her crate is in your bedroom she's fine? She only started screaming when you put her in the kitchen?

Mine have crates similar to yours and when they were babies I kept them on a bench next to my bed so they could see and hear me. I would put my fingers in through the gate to settle them if they cried - but that only happened the first couple nights. Once they were potty trained I let them up on the bed with me.

Do you have a little radio you can turn on in there at night for her? I never used the crates, I've always used the xpens, that way they have more room and have water, food, pee pad accesible to them

With regard the downstairs part, it was a last resort. She had been in her box ever night since she arrived on Sunday but the night before she had started to scream bloody murder and then after half an hour of her doing it again last night I thought I'd just try putting her in the kitchen to see how it goes. I have M.E. so I desperately need my sleep so it really was my last option. She just does not stop, I wouldn't be surprised if she carried on yelling all night.

I am sure it's just that she wants to be with me in my bed but until she is house trained I dont feel I should allow that. Dont want her piddling/pooping inside at night. I check her box every day and she has not done it in there so that's one thing ruled out. I didn't have her shipped so there's no previous association with her box.

Think I'll try having her box beside my bed tonight so I can put my fingers through to comfort her, but if that doesn't work I'll try getting a pen.

I really am worried that she is unhappy at night, and so want to find a way round this, I dont want my baby girl crying. So thank you all so much for your suggestions!

Jess, she might sleep way better with you! Daizy was like that when she was little...she was scared and lonely but as soon as I let her sleep with me...she would sleep as LONG as I do. I did put little bells on her collar just in case she woke up in the night! I have to admit we did have a tiny tinkle accident.....but she got much better...especially if I took her out right before bed....you could always keep a pad right next to your bed...so if she wakes up you can put her down on it...and not have to go outside ya know?

Hope you work it out soon, not only for her sake but for yours too!

one thing that really helps milu sleep at night is if she's had a palydate and played with other puppies or if i take her on a long walk.

basically if you try to tire your puppy out by exercising or playing with her, she should be fine sleeping through the night.

I'm with you sister!! For several nights (what felt like an eternity), Bella truly did scream all night long!!! (This was during our process of figuring out what would work for her.) Yes, even when she was tiny and we finally put her in our bed out of sheer exhaustion, she would sleep all night long...no accidents! BUT, my bf doesn't want her sleeping with us for lots of reasons, and though I love her and like her sleeping with me, I absolutely see his point. Putting our fingers through helped at first for just a little while, but she would still howl! It took all of those things for her....she was scared and needed the comfort of smells and closeness and warmth, but actually being in our bed was still better than all those things. I eventually had to let her whine for a long, long time (a lot of the night) until she gave up and realized her bed was definitely the next best thing! I certainly have my fingers-crossed for you Jess. I hope your baby isn't as stubborn as mine and you get good results TONIGHT!!

Oh, and Bella couldn't be alone during the day for even a minute without all the wailing too!!! That was such a difficult time! Thank goodness we got through it!! I love Bella more than the sun, moon, and stars....she is the light in my life!!

When I got Pixie she was 13 months old but not potty trained and use to being in the Breeders basement with the other dogs, so she screamed when put in the crate day or night. My pom and other yorkie slept with me and she wanted to be with us. And I know what you mean when you say screamed! I have never had a dog that screamed. What I ended up doing as I couldn't have her waking everyone up, I put pee pads all over my bedroom carpet and let her sleep with us. She settled right down and never had an accident on the bed. I hope you can get her to settle down soon.
