| tangles I have a yorkie boy who is 16 weeks. He is as stubborn as they make them. Brushing his hair is a major production and he has very fine hair. I took him to the groomer last week and the only thing she could do was give him a short puppy cut. I hate to have to keep his hair so short but don't want to make this a major fight every time I try and comb his hair. He's cold, we live in the great northeast and I wonder how I get him to stop fighting me. He bites and growles and I am ready to smack him if he wasn't so cute. Any suggestions.. my other dogs love to be brushed. Will he grow out of it and eventually let me comb his hair or will I always have to keep him in a puppy cut? |

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | First of all, please don't get angry with him I CAN imagine that it is frustrating for you, on your end - but maybe he was growling, etc. because he was matted and it hurt him? Puppy hair usually tangles pretty easy, at least from my experience it does. Yorkie's are very high maintenance dogs and they require daily brushing...so, if you are not prepared to brush him every single day, then I would say YES...you need to keep him cut short in a puppy cut - otherwise, he is just going to mat and tangle. What I use on my babies (one has shorter hair, and one has hair that is touching the ground) is Buddy Splash. This can be found at Petco or online. It is an all natural spray on conditioner and it really helps to get through the tangles if there are any. You simply spray it on the coat and brush. And - it smells really good too, so that's a big plus Good luck with your little one!

| Welcome to YT! And congratulations on your little boy Stedmansmommy has said it well, please don't get angry at him. He will feel your frustration, and that will make it harder for both of you. He is just a puppy and this is completely normal behavior. My Yorkie took some time to get used to the brushing, and she had a tangly coat as a pup. I did keep her in a puppy cut from 6 -10 months and then starting growing it out. But brushed her every day (and still do). What you want to do is get him used to it gently and slowly. Take a brush and just brush one or two strokes on his back, reward him when he stays still. Keep the sessions short. Do it daily. Before you know it, you won't remember when it was that he was growling and squiggling when you tried to brush him, lol. Just keep progressing and rewarding him for letting you do it. Even if you do decide to keep him in a puppy cut, keep brushing daily, then when the time comes that you want to grow it out, he will be used to it.

Donating YT Addict | Tyke doesn't like being brushed either. I just sit on the floor or the couch and hold him and talk to him the whole time and tell him what a good boy he is. It does help to use a soft calm voice....trust me I know I know how you feel at times. But doing this he is getting better at it.

| Thanks on the tip on the detangler... I will make a trip tomorrow to get my little baby some. She has very kinky hair and it tangles easily. Do you have any tips on taking care of the goop that comes from her eyes. It's like getting gum on her hair close to her eyes and I have tried warm wash clothes to get it out with no avail. I can't comb it out because it hurts her. HELP!!! |

| Daizy hated to get her coat brushed when she was younger....but if you stick with it you will see results...it might take months but it's worth it. I ALWAYS give Daizy a special treat that she gets ONLY after her brushing. Now she waits patiently while I brush her out....and if I take too much time getting her treat she tells me about it! lol And the "calm" advice it priceless!! She will definately feel your agitation.

| oooh Lucie hates getting brushed too, but it's because her hair gets so tangled. I ended up finding some stuff that works soooo great!! It's made by John Paul who also does Paul Mitchell hair products. And it's just called "Pet" I found it in the beauty supply store that I get my hair stuff from, they have shampoo, conditioner, the detangler spray and some other stuff. So far I have just used the detangler spray and it works great on her. The only problem that I have found is that if I use it on her everyday when I brush her, it starts to make her kind of oily. But it works wonders for brushing out tangles, and she sits through it a lot easier. And they don't test on animals!

| help with tangles Thanks for all of your suggestions on getting widget's hair brushed. I have a wide aray of brushes and combs. I started with just a regular hair brush and worked with a small comb. He just hates it but we do a little at a time and have his favorite treat handy. He is starting to mellow out a little. He has been a really hyper guy. He drives my other dogs nuts with his 24 7 energy. He looks awful with his puppy cut, but we'll continue to work with him. He has lots of coats and shirts to put on to keep him warm and he now sleeps under the covers instead of on them. He is growing like a weed. As soon as I fugure how to upload a picture I'll post one. |
