Yorkie's are very high maintenance dogs and they require daily brushing...so, if you are not prepared to brush him every single day, then I would say YES...you need to keep him cut short in a puppy cut - otherwise, he is just going to mat and tangle.

What I use on my babies (one has shorter hair, and one has hair that is touching the ground) is Buddy Splash. This can be found at Petco or online. It is an all natural spray on conditioner and it really helps to get through the tangles if there are any. You simply spray it on the coat and brush. And - it smells really good too, so that's a big plus

Good luck with your little one!
What excellent advice! Especially the part about not getting angry, because even if you dont yell at them they can FEEL the person's frustration which immediately puts them in the defensive mode. As soon as my baby starts getting stressed I stop. Many short sessions are so much better for both than a long traumatizing one! Also I would advise taking to the groomer more frequently when they are young to help get them used to it. (only the best groomer is good enough to help) so opt for the most gentle groomer rather than the least expensive one.
