YorkieTalk Newbie! | Family of a new baby boy yorkie Hello, my name is carla and we are the new proud family members of our baby boy duke who made 12 weeks today. He also made one week with us. I have a few questions if someone can help us. 1. He urinates in the right area, but does not poo in the right area. Please help us understand this. 2. About the same time every night he gets up and bark and whine for no reason. Please help us understand this. 3. Most important, we are undecided of which brand of food we should get him. Want to get the brand which will be the best for him. The ones we are considering are: Old mother hubbard, eukanuba, nutro natural choice, royal canin, or authority. Please let us know which of these or another brand which you suggest. Thank you, duke's family |

| Hi! I have a new baby boy too. Well, I have had him about a month, and he's almost 4 months old. I am not sure how much I can help, but I can tell you what I have experienced in the first month: 1. My baby, (Teddy) didn't poop in the right place in the beginning either! he would leave the room or go behind something. I guess he just wanted privacy. It slowly got better, but he will usually go to a pad in another room to poop. 2. Barking and whining at night? Teddy only barks and cries at night when he has to potty. I usually get up at night to potty anyway, so I always take him in the bathroom with me, and I turn on only the heat lamp so it's not so shockingly bright in the middle of the night, and I go potty and he has a pad on the other side of the bathroom that he uses if he has to go too. Sometimes he goes, sometimes he doesn't. But it works good. Then we go back to bed. Also, I don't talk to him when we get up at night so hopefully he won't think we're getting up to play. 3. Our breeder fed Teddy Eukeneuba, so that's what I give him. I have compared it to Nutro, and it has higher protein and fat, and our Vet said it's a very good food. He likes it and does fine with it. But, my Vet said that when they are small, their digestive system is like a baby's and you shouldn't give treats or change foods. When I asked about training treats, the Vet said just give him a piece of his food. Yesterday we worked with a trainer and I hadn't planned on doing that and didn't have his food. They gave him biscuits or cookies, and by last night he had diarrhea. Today he seems ok. The one treat I do give him and that doesn't seem to bother him is the dried chicken chews. He loves them and I hear it is much better than the rawhide chews that are not good for them to swallow bits of. Good luck with your baby! Hope this helps a little. | Potty Training can take some time, so be patient. 12 weeks is still a baby. Keep his areas small, not too much free run (it's too scarey and over-whelming for them) and it will not enforce proper training methods. To be honest you've got a FULL YEAR on your hands of Ups and Downs. Right now is the critical time for learning and socialization, so invest in him now and you and he should do fine! Barking and Crying in the middle of the night, again he's still a baby and is missing his Momma and litermates. Plus, he still has a small bladder, so remember that he probably can't hold it all night long. Your house and rules are new to him, it will take some time to adjust. Food: Old Mother Hubbard, which is Wellness would be my choice from what you listed. The rest of your list either contains By-Products of some sort and/or Corn of some sort. By-Products are nasty and I wouldn't feed it to any of my dogs. Corn (in any form of text) is a cheap filler and often causes allergies in dogs. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thank you Thank you all for replying. And actually, i went today to petco and picked up the wellness for puppies. I hope duke comes to like it and that it helps with his itching. I hate to see him itching so much. Also, we are being very patient with him, and to be honest he is shocking us and showing us something new everyday. Tonight my son was going to bed and said go to bed duke and he just stood there looking at him. So i told my son to tell him good night, after he told duke good night he turned around and went in his crate which by the way we keep open for him to come and go in it as he pleases. He seems to be a very intelligent little one. And we know he misses his family, which is why we try to show him as much love as when can. And he would not bark to potty, but to play at between 3 and 3:30 but now 4 am. Cause he has full range of our half bath which like i said he uses for urine most of the time but just not poo. I know with time he'll get better, and we have been seeing it. Also, i pray for god to help our little duke. And know i'm not crazy just believe in prays and that god can control animals to if someone prays for them. Good night and again thank you. |

| Hey welcome!! My Sumo is thirteen weeks today So our puppy boys are very close in age. with the poopy thing I just kept a really close eye on him and every time I saw a sign of "pre-poop"I would take him to his pad. the minute hed start to walk away I just kept putting him back on and then when he was finished I gave him lots of praise and a couple cheerios. With the late night barking, he just needs to get used to your schedule, sumo used to wake me up to play every three hours but now he waits til about 6 30 or seven and Im hoping eventually he'll just sleep as long as I do. I also just switched Sumo's food to wellness and he seems to be doing really well with it. good luck and congrats on your little one |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thank you sumos' mom Thank you for your reply and congratulations, and yes they are very close in age. I just love our little duke so much and we have not had him that long. Actually the day we bought him, we were really suppose to be just going to see what the lady had. The minute i held duke i told my husband, we have to buy him. I know this may sound crazy to some, but i prayed about this just like i do everything els in my life and in me i knew he was the one. We have only had him for 8 days today, and i am so excited, esp to see how he looks when he gets older and how he'll act as an adult. However, i don't want to rush this time by, cause it is so much fun and joy. Carla |

| Hi and welcome to YT!! congratulations on your baby Duke!!! If he's itching he might be getting dry skin from the shampoo you are using...you might switch and see what happens. Or the obvious...fleas? My daughters yorkie started scratching quite a bit...but we noticed it was mostly her ears that she was scratching..and we figured out that she has ear mites. So you could have that checked as well! Hope you figure it out soon for his sake...

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Baby duke We are hoping the food change will cure the itching problem. Cause upon doing some research several times i read that the dog food he was started on which also bought can cause this problem cause of the ingredients in it. In addition we were told that he had and might still do have some ear mites, which we are treating him for right now. However, the itching is almost everyone, which is why i am hoping that the new dog food will stop it. About the shampoo, we all gave him a bath once and that was last monday. We used hartz puppy shampoo. Is that one ok, or is there another type that you would highly recommend. About the fleas, he goes back to the doctor this coming monday and i'll ask them to check to see if he has flea. Also, we started him on vectra 3d for fleas, ticks and mosquitos after we gave him a bath. Is this brand ok, or is there another that you would highly recommend. We want to give and take care of duke the best we can, and since all of this is new to us, we need a little help. Carla duke's mom also, i hope you enjoy your new baby boy as much as we are loving and enjoying duke in just 8 1/2 days. |
