I just bought a 2yr old male yorkie. I was told by the owners that he was totally house broken. He is totally not at all house broken. The first few days he wouldn't go at all outside. Now he pees outside but also comes inside hikes his leg and pees everywhere, and he won't poop outside. Help

Has he been neutered? If not, you could try getting him neutered, but, with that age, most likely, it won't do any good..The house is new to him, and he's marking it..You have to start from square one, just as if he would have been a puppy..treats when he goes outside and pees and poops and a lot of praise, and change your voice and let him know when he pees in the house that's not acceptable. If you don't catch him doing it, then you can't punish him later for it

Oh this can be a hard one, first I want to say congrats on you new boy!!! I will tell you that for me keeping Rocket, my new boy close by ALL the time has been working the best for me, even on a leash or in my lap, what ever it takes so that I can catch him every time he lifts that leg, when he starts to lift I clap my hands together to startle him and then take him out, we walk arround outside till he lifts again and then I give him a treat just like a puppy, After a month of this he has gotten where he can roam further and further in the house from me with no worries. If all else fails, belly bands work well!

No, he hasn't been neutered. I have a special room for him, and I only let him in the rest of the house when I can watch him. He goes on the pee pad sometimes, and sometimes its the wall

He pooped outside today, I was so proud of him. My Kaydee is completely house broken and I'm afraid he will mess her up. He is doing better, but it sure is hard work!

Sometimes they have a set back when placed in a new setting. Some people have said that just moving to a new house makes their dog forget everything. Remember marking is different than peeing, and it's almost impossible to train an unneutered dog not to mark. Many breeders use bellybands because of this. Glad he went poop outside today, and he'll probably pick up your girls good habits, instead of her picking up his bad habits. Some people have suggested putting a large bottle on the pee pad, and this helps their males go on the pad, a bleach bottle or soda bottle filled with water is said to work, but he probably still mark, that's a different problem all together.

My daughter got a 1 yr. old that was supposed to be potty trained...however she kept pottying in the house....so we had to start over from square 1.

Just treat him like a pup...and start potty training him...since he's older he'll prob pick it up quicker.

My daughter's dog caught on pretty quick where it was "ok" to pee and "poo" and where it wasn't!

Good luck...as far as marking...not sure you can ever stop that since he's still intact. Now it's a habit for him...maybe someone else has an idea how to work with that one.

That's the problem then...if they're not neutered, and they go to a new home, they are going to be lifting their legs everywhere to mark their territory..wonder if he was ever used for breeding? Most males that have been used for breeding, will continue lifting their legs, even in their own homes

Neutering at this age probably won't have much effect but is still a good idea, especially if your girl isn't fixed. If there is any hint of a female in heat, even from a couple of years ago, your intact male is going to mark. He may have been moderately housebroken before and changing homes will often trigger a set back, but more often someone didn't train him in the beginning.

Consistency is key, and freedom is the death nell of potty training. He should either be in a crate or by your side 24/7 until he gives you an accident free month. It seems extreme but if you do the work now he'll be a good pet for the rest of his life, if not....

Crate training and lead training will bring you closer together and he'll learn to learn from you. Communication is important, once he understands that he can make you happy by going potty outside, your on your way. Punishing him for going inside will teach him to hide when he needs to potty....because his master is insane and thinks he should never go. A loud clap, pennies in a metal can shaken loudly, anything that startles him when he's about to mark is good, a treat for a job well done outside closes the deal.

Whoever invented belly bands.....is a genius. JMHO

Some of the ladies here make them. They can be a simple band or part of an outfit. They go around the mid section and hold an absorbent pad so if he does go...it catches it.

Read everything there is to read about potty training and you can do it just like a puppy. It is no different because of their age. Take her out every hour, confine her to the part of the house where you can see her, give her a treat when she potties outside, etc. Good luck!

I just rescued a seven year old yorkie? his name is Bisquit . He is only partially potty trained. I have been reading what everyone is writing on this subject but the problem im having is that he only pees and poops in the house when im either a sleep or at work. I have never seen him try to go while im awake or home and he is with me every second because he follows me every where. I already knew that yelling after the fact would do no good, so I haven't. Also, I would like for him to use a potty pee pad too, since I have a work schedule that varies. I cannot be consistent everyday with morning and evening walking times. I have tried to get scented pads and double that with the drops that smell like horrible pee, ewh! it was supposed to attract him to the pads. he couldn't have cared less. I have only had him about two months and I pour love over him 24/7. He's the best but this is becoming a serious problem. I step in right when I wake up in the a.m. and sometimes at night after I have fed him and took a long walk and he has already went pee and poop. HELP!!!

House breaking an adult dog is not that much different than breaking a puppy. Actually it is a bit easier since an adult does not go as often as a puppy does.

Also remember an adult dog that is in a new environment is having to deal with the stress of new people and surroundings. Accidents are bound to happen. If the former owner is available it is important to talk to them about what kind of conditions the dog is used to having for pottying purposes.

Some small dogs are trained to use puppy pads while others may go outside. The easiest thing to do is take the dog for a walk every couple of hours and make sure it has done it's business before bedtime. Walking a dog helps the body to let off wastes much more quickly than waiting for something to happen.

An male dog that is not neutered dog is more likely to lift it's leg to "mark" than one that is neutered so you might want to get that taken care of as soon as possible. Being in a new area would help stimulate the desire to mark.

My Yorkie is 4 years old, and she will do good with using the bathroom outside, then out of the blue she will start peeing in the hallway again. I have tried showing her the mistake and telling her no, but she can't resist I guess. I have even shampood the carpet a few times. Any ideas?
