All puppies go through a transformation. All are born black and tan (except parti yorkies) and then go through a transformation.

How long does the 'transformation' take? My Yorkie's top of the head was black. Quickly turned more white than silver. He is 5 months now. Will his white top turn brown or is the white his permanent color?

They turn grey first, then their color starts to come in. What it will end up like, you'll have to look at the parents to make a guess.
As for how long it takes, some change colors quickly and keep changing for a while, others are slow. I have read that those that break their color really slowly, or later on tend to keep a much darker.

Here's an example of my baby. He broke his color later on, and still is pretty dark. This is Kaji, formerly Bear.

That is sooooo true! Smokey came to us at 6 months old and he had the WORST puppy hair ever. In the car back from being groomed his hair would already be a knotted mess, so she asked me to cut it all off. He was a dark, dark grey, almost black, but not quite, but when she cut him all down, he was almost white! If it wasn't for that precious little face, I wouldn't have believed he was my dog. Here is his somewhat before and after... That was his first haircut at about 8 months and that's how silver he was.

my puppy's mother was all sivler and his dad tan and black i"m intrested to see what color he turns to be. He is only 8 weeks old this week and already has grey hair on his face, he's my little old man..i love my biscuit

Hi everyone! When do they stop changing color? Juliette's mom is grey and her dad is tan. She was born black and tan but her black back is looking like it might turn grey and her face is tan and grey. What do I put on her registration papers? I need to get those in but I am unsure as to what color put down. The choices I have are 018 Black & Tan, 041 Blue & Gold, 044 Blue & Tan, 234 Black & Gold. She will be a year in a couple of weeks. She hasn't had a hair cut yet but after all your posts my scissors are ready! LOL

That's so true! Holly's hair was so long by 16 weeks that we had to take her to the groomers. I specifically asked for the top of her head not to be cut because all her silver hair was coming in and she had black tips which I loved, but of course the groomer SHAVED most of her body and butchered her. She came back with silver hair and all her black hair was gone. Needless to say Holly was very upset at my boyfriend and I and wouldn't look at us for the rest of the day, lol.

Thanks for the compliment! His breeder checked Gold/Black on his registration papers. Breeders seem to know, especially since he was a lot older when he came home. He's not done changing yet! His face is still pretty "salt and pepper." The tips of his ears are still black. I wonder when he'll be done "evolving" into his adult color?
To find what to check, I would ask your breeder. They should know how to evaluate their own pups.

Buddy was black and tan, now he is silver with a hint of black still in his tail, his legs are golden and so is his head, it strange really when you think you have bought a black dog and he turns out silver, his coat is like human hair as well

all yorkies change colors, i believe most of them are always black and tan as puppies, my baby is 9 months and his head is all silver and his body is still black with a bit of silver coming through
