| New Yorkie in less than 6 hours!!!!!!! Hi Everyone! I am so excited/anxious/nervous. At 10:30 this morning (in 6 hours), I will be getting my very first Yorkie! I went to the pet store today to pick up what he may need. I will list what I got, let me know if I am missing anything: • Water and food bowl • Leash and collar (very cute too!) * Sour apple spray (give it a try) • Toys (balls, squeaky toys, etc) • Brush and comb • Bedding • Kennel (which will come with the pup) • Mat for the 2 bowls • Treats (and a few kinds, in case he doesn't like them) • Doggie food • Clothes • A cute, cute bee Halloween costume • Gate I also know I need shampoo, and other things, but this is just a start. Please let me know anything I am missing. I want him to have it ALL! I need an ID tag. Any sites that you would recommend I go to and get them (the cheaper the better) Also, I am afraid since I am adopting hm and he is 2-years-old that he won't be loyal to me or that he won't see me as his owner, mom and care taker. Any advice on that would be great. As I mentioned, today (Oct, 4) is my birthday! And it couldn't be a better 25th b-day!! •I get a free cute, cute Yorkie! • They are running an extremely low cost vet clinic tomorrow. For a Rabies, Distemper and a check-up by a great vet costs $25! I can't go wrong with that, so we are going as soon as I get my lil' Yorkie! I have one more important question: The dog has had is name for 2 years. He has spent most of the time in his kennel as his owners have not had time for him. Would it be cruel to change his name, if it sounded the same and started with the same letter? Would he get used to it, or should I keep it as is? Thanks! MissTink

| First off Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! Sounds like a really good list and CONGRATULATIONS!!! on getting your new yorkie. I would suggest instead of getting a collar to get a harness because pulling on the collar could cause collapsed trachea if he pulls hard on his collar. I got Dino's ID tag at pet smart and it was about $6-7. Happy Birthday BTW!! That must be the most amazing birthday gift ever!! About the changing of the name, I don't believe it would be cruel to change the name, maybe you could change the name to something that sounds similar to the name he has, like if his name is Danny you could try Manny, because they tend to recognize just the sounds of the syllables and not the whole word itself. A friend of mine found a dog that was about 4 years old and after 2 months he started responding to the name so he may just get used to it. Also don't feel bad if he does not warm up to you at first, it is going to be a big change for him, so try to take things slow and not expect too much from him. He will eventually warm up to you and things will get better. Once again Congratulations on getting your new Yorkie and Welcome to Yorkie Talk it really is a wonderful community with really great people. Oh Yeah, there is one rule here: YOU MUST POST LOTS OF PICTURES

| Congrats!!! I'm sooo excited for you!!! Do you have a step-in harness for him? Its very important that you don't attach his leash to his collar as he could get damage to his little throat, these are very delicate babies even the bigger ones are still small dogs I do use collars with an ID tag incase they should manage to get loose but never attach a leash to them, they all have step-in harnesses even my giant OESD! As for the name, I have changed an adult dogs name in the past. I did keep it similar from Sea-bass (as in fish WTH) to Sheamas, we had no problems. If you really don't like his name then change it something better. Afterall your baby is getting a new start in life!!!

| We adopted Camden last April and she was almost 2 1/2 and we changed her name and she picked it up in no time, so I'm sure you will be fine! I was going to suggest what others have already said and to NOT use a collar, but a harness! Also, I would suggest a doggie toothbrush and paste or a really good dental cleaner that goes in water. Alot of people also use Petzlife which is either an oral gel or spray for their teeth! Congratulations and can't wait to see pictures!!

| Hey welcome to YT and your new furbaby. I would think hold off on clothes but since you are already have them keep the receipts. My Chino was so small, and I was so shocked at how little is little. I would have bought the wrong sizes, and I know this because I put back a small bed and got a big bed thinking he was big. He is 5 lbs. I didn't realize 5lbs is so so small. |

| You may need that shampoo and conditioner sooner than you think These little ones tend to start looking a little scruffy about a week after bathing, or at least my girls do. Depending on his coat, you will want to brush him daily to keep him from matting. Is he potty trained? You may need some pee pads. Definitely use a harness for him and not a collar. The collar is fine for wearing his tag, but not for walking. Congrats and Happy Birthday! Can't wait to see pictures

Frimousse was 1 year 6 months when I adopted her . She already went to 6 other homes . She was afraid of everythings . Instead of going to her and pick her up , I gave her the time to know me and adjust to her new place . It took a little while but now , she follow me everywhere . The best things to do for the first few days is to not impose yourself on the little one . With love , patience , patience and patience , he'll feel at home with you . I am sure he'll love you with unconditional love . |

| Congrats and happy birthday! First of all, enjoy your Yorkie when you get him but the key word for the first few days or weeks is probably going to be patience. I'm sure with enough commitment and patience he'll be a perfect angel that does well with you and knows the name you've given him! I think you've got a really great list over there! I know I was doing the same thing before I got Zoë home! Like everyone else has said, get a harness for him. You can keep a collar on while you're home but use a harness to walk him! Also, I got Zoë a Red Dingo tag. It's really great, really small (the size of a penny), super strong looking and feeling, very cute, and with shipping was on the cheap side still! There are a bunch of places to get them, I got mine from a YT vendor. Best of luck! Again, have a great birthday and enjoy your new little man! |
