My puppy being tested for a liver shunt Haven't posted in awhile, been away and battling strep throat right now. Who gets strep in AUGUST?!! Anyway, I took Indy to the vet yesterday to get his stitches out and to have her look at his eyes. I posted a couple weeks ago about Indy having squinty eyes. At first we thought it was allergies, but he doesn't itch, there's no discharge, and they're not red. It was happening on and off for a week but in the last week it seems that he's squinty all the time. I had him to the vet 2 times to have it checked, but when I would get there he would be fine. Yesterday she got to see the squint! She says that she doesn't think there's an irritation because when she would pry his eyes apart he would slowly roll them down like he was sleeping. He was kinda quiet while he was there, but he isn't quiet like that when he's home!! She was asking me questions about his behavior, eating, etc., but none of them seemed to fit him. She did a full blood test and just called me to say that everything is fine there, but she wants me to bring him back to do the fasting bile salts test, and then they feed him and test it again in 2 hours. Being the neurotic person I am, I came home yesterday and obsessed on the internet looking for ANYTHING on liver shunts. I feel I have a decent knowledge on them now, and Indy doesn't have any of the clinical signs for this, but I feel the need to rule it out by this fasting test. He eats like a pig, he's 6mos old and weighs 9lbs(I call him my giant yorkie!), he plays hard and rough with my other dogs to the point where I have to separate them sometimes, when he sleeps he isn't unresponsive, he hears any little movement of me or the other dogs, I don't know. I even looked up narcolepsy in dogs (they really do get that!) but he doesn't fit that either. Any advice you guys have would be appreciated.

It is a good idea if for nothing else than for your peace of mind... It certainly does not sound like liver shunt to me.. My breeder has a sweet little guy that has LS.. What a sad little guy he was. He would not eat and was so listless.. He is doing much much better now.. I hope you get the information you need for you baby and that all works out well.. Keep us posted.. and thank you for sharing..

Doesn't sound like liver shunt to me either but I am no expert. I think the pothamalogist is a good idea.

I do not own a Yorkie at the moment... I do own a Maltese... and he was thoroughly tested for a liver shunt. The reason he was is because his regular blood test liver levels were elevated. If this is an eye problem... why is a bile acid test being done? It wouldnt hurt to do the test... but I never heard of an eye problem caused from a liver shunt.

The vet thinks he's quiet, and whenever she would pull his eyes open they looked fine, but then he would roll them downward like he wanted to sleep. She was concerned that the problem was he was too quiet and tired, hence the bile test. She had another Yorkie patient that didn't present with the typical symptoms and ended up with a shunt, I think she's just ruling stuff out at this point. The opthamologist is my next stop! Thanks for your replies, it's appreciated, I'm really worried about my baby!

Ls Of course, a shunt is possible, but at 9 pounds and full of energy I can't see it. I agree with the others..time for the eye doctor.

Well.. it wont hurt to do the bile acid test of course. Is your baby show those signs you described AFTER eating? Keep us updated what the results are! I have A LOT of info (god forbid) if you need it.

Thanks Kodiesmom. No, he doesn't have any of the signs after eating. He actually is a little better after eating, it's right before he eats when the eyes seem the worst. The test was done this morning and I'll know the results tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.
