Lately Zoe gets so upset if I leave the house. When I leave for work in the morning, go to the gym, or just go to the store she barks like crazy and barely lets me out. Any suggestions on how to change this behavior? She wasn't like this until I went back to work after having the summer off. I am sure she has separation anxiety, but I really can't get out the door.

Ahh, i feel your pain!! Just recently I was told, along with all the other tenants in our buildings that we were not allowed to bring our pets to work with us.

Leaving Mia at home is so hard! Especially when she starts to shake before I leave because she knows she has to stay home (she's not a barker). After I leave she cries for hours, but lately she has been taking the separation easier, so I'm told by the roommate downstairs that has to listen to her cry.

This might be REALLY hard but, I think the less attention you pay toward them when you leave the easier it is on them. Does that sound weird? I could be totally wrong about this technique, but I think this works for Mia. When I leave, I leave her a treat, give her a kiss, don't overdo it, I walk out the door and don't look back because I know she waiting for me in the window. It just breaks my heart!!

Good luck.. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice!

I used to have this problem with Bobby. I am sure this method is not the right way, but it is the only thing that works everytime.
I give him a treat and while he is eating it I will sneak out. He has gotten to the point now where every morning he knows the routine, he sees me grab my purse and coffee so he will sit on the edge of the couch and wait for his treat. I have been doing this for about 6 months and now he will even wait to eat his treat until after I leave.
I do have to make sure that its a treat that he can't gobble up in seconds. I usually give him a chicken jerky.
Like I said, its probably not the best method but it has saved me from tearing my little guy off my leg in the mornings. And I dont feel as guilty leaving him.

Maybe I need to get better treats!!! Mia ignores them.... maybe she's just trying to make me feel worse for leaving her! She eventually eats them because they are gone when I get home!

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention before... I also leave the TV on for her when I leave. I think it comforts her just a tad. BF makes fun of me for turning it to Animal Planet!

I have a very similar situation. Cocoa is 7 mo. I am a teacher so was off for the summer. I use a crate. I do everything I have read about: kong with treats, bully stick, toys, the shirt I slept in for the scent, and I leave the radio on. She eats the treats out of her kong but does not play with her toys or chew the bully stick until we get home. Lately I notice she shakes when I pick her up to put her in the crate. She is alone for 7.5 hours. I was thinking about closing her in my bedroom, where she sleeps instead of the crate. She waits on my bed when she knows I am leaving so maybe she would be happier there. I am also open to anything else I can do.

I forgot to add that I gave Bobby the run of the house too. I think this helped him to not feel so lonely. He absolutly hated being in his pin. He was big enough size wise and he was potty trained, so I felt that he would do ok.

Thanks for all the advice. I do alot of the things suggested and maybe now I will add a few more of the suggestions. She has gotten a little better...she isnt peeing wherever she wants to let me know she is angry! I have also taken her to doggie day camp 2 x a week, so she isn't alone all week. It seems to break up the time. Thanks again for all your replies...

Sophie hated her crate, and in the past, I would have to pry her off the pillows on the bed to get her there. Or, she would sadly go into the crate when I said "Go into your house". Then I bought a baby gate, and I put her in the bedroom. She can sleep on her favorite pillows now

, and she is not "shut in" with a closed door. She seems much happier.

Nolee, recently started doing this too. He started this howling when I leave. I don't work full time, only some weekends, but I guess I spend (we spend) all the rest of the time together and he developed separation anxiety. I think I will also try sending him to daycare at least once a week. Hopefully this will help. Good Luck to you!
