Yorkie vs Silky: 2 Different Breeds?

So Silkies hair stays grey on their faces? I guessed I missed that part. My babies' mom & dad both had beautiful gold heads/faces. And after looking at more photos of slikies, I can see the longer snout.

I'm just a slow learner...

Yes it does. If you can find the thread on here with this years dog shows you can see some beautiful examples of silky's on there verses yorkies

My dog sounds more like a silky! How can a person tell! I could have a poorly bred but pure Yorkie, a Yorkie with a Silky past, or a Silky registered as a Yorkie.

My Daisy is 7 months old, 8lbs 4 oz has a pretty long snout and a long body. She is just CKC registered by a "backyard breeder". I mean, how can you really know without DNA testing?

I guess that would be the only way for you to know 100% but she looks like a yorkie to me. Doesnt look anything like the Silky's I know. I always felt like the name Silky was a misnomer for them because their hair feels very very course to the touch also.

Let me say first that I don't really care what she is. She is my dog and I love her (but not so much the spitty toy she is pressing onto my foot at the moment ). And I have never seen a Silky that I am aware of.

It is just that this is a common thread topic and when I read the AKC Silky Terrier description it really seems to describe my dog. Yorkies, because they are so popular and expensive are over bred without regard to the breed standard much of the time. I think at least half of us have dogs that don't fit the breed standard.

When there is another breed that is so close in appearance to the Yorkshire Terrier how do we really know? The differences in the standards of the two breeds also seem to be the common ways that our Yorkies stray from the breed standard. (My dog: bigger, longer snout and longer body) That was my point.

I would like to correct an incorrect statement about Silkies........a true correctly breed silky will have a TRUE silk coat.

As with any breed, there are incorrect breedings but just as a correct yorkie has a silk (cool to the touch) coat......the same goes for silkies.

I currently own a fair quality yorkie, a yorkie that is way out standard and three very nice show quality silkies including one that a have out at AKC shows as a special (championed at the age of one).

If I can add more thing.......silkies should be gold and tan in the face - with their face gold and topnot tan/fawn....not grey.

well going by the silky's my daughter owns and those of other friends all of which are akc registered the hair on their heads has stayed silver an on their chest also and the have longer sturdier bodies than most yorkies. And when I spok e of course hair I meant to the touch. It looks silky but does not feel silky like our yorkies does.

It seem the hair on these dogs have turned gold on the head unlike those i know of but there is still a vast difference.

Did not mean to offend anyone about silky's not feeling silky. We love our daughters little guy and he comes from a very reputable breeder ( unlike our little yorkie guy) But his coat does not feel silky like out yorkies or other yorkies I know of and neither do those of the other silky's who belong to our friends. Don't get me wrong he Is a very beautiful baby and maybe he will get silkier to the touch as he ages ( one year old now) To me he has a courser feel to the touch. Maybe its just me because I am a retired hairdresser and probably am judging by human hair textures. And I did correct myself on the facial hair color. My daughter told me today that her little guys fur is starting to break gold on the head now

I would disagree with you on their hair feeling course. I have had two Silkies and their hair is much softer and silkier than most Yorkies I have met and with a much great sheen. And both of them have had hair all the way to the ground. If you don't blow them out their hair does have curl.

Not sure why but maybe like I said in above post it has to do with age. All the ones I know are under 2 years old and their hair doesn't feel as silky to me or maybe I just haven't felt them right after baths. I am far from an expert on them just going by those I have been around. I am sure you all who own them know more about them than me. All that being said they are beautiful loving dogs.
