Is this as far back as you investigated? Genetic makeup on any living thing, goes back much farther than mom and dad....you may be a spitting image of your great great grandmother when she was young....same thing with dogs, and every other living breathing thing walking around. Your genetic make up goes back many generations, not just as far back as your own momma and daddy. THAT is the problem with breeders that say a puppy will be small because the parents were small....the parents had very little to do with what that puppy is going to be.....it goes back MANY generations, but you can get a pretty good idea about what your puppy will be, if you go back 9-12 generations. THIS is what excellent breeders/show breeders do...they have a line of dogs they have bred for many, many generations, and they know with reasonable soundness, what that breeding is going to produce in size, color, temperament, etc. Backyard breeders throw two dogs together, with zero knowledge about what went on in the generations before those dogs, and they end up with genetic incompatibilities/deformaties, both internally as well as externally, and they could care less. All they are concerned with are "puppies = $$$$", and the sooner they can dump them, the more money they clear. My hackles go straight up when I see "my puppy is 6 (or 7 or 8 or 9....anything less than a bare minimum of 12 weeks) weeks old"......this almost alone, is contributing to the explosion of puppy mills across this country.....so anyone that is financially supporting puppy mills on one hand, can hardly complain about this blight called puppy mills, on the existence of our beautiful Yorkshire terrier breed and the destruction these people are proliferating.

She will probably grow a little more and develop muscle her second year. Usually Yorkies are full grown between 8 months and 1 year. Depends on genetics. My boys are brothers and had a late growth spurt at 11 months, but that is not typical.

Our sweet, beautiful Zeusy has been 4.8 lbs. since he was 7-8 months old. He is now almost 17 months old - still 4.8 lbs!

This is great advice for looking for reputable breeders in your area. I noticed that the OP is from Calgary...make sure you stay far away from the notorious (unethical) breeder that breeds tinies to celebrities (i.e. Paris Hilton) who changes their pups like they change clothes.

In terms of her health;it is great that at 6mths old there has been no overt problem. Until your dog has passed at least 5yrs old - you will not know if you dodged the many genetic problems of this breed - and or structural problems. She might put on another 8oz or so if you keep her fit and feed the appropriate amount of food. There are a few lines that will spurt in growth and weight during the time frame of 6-12 months old.

But I will say with a pup this small you have to be extra carefull with activities of daily life. No leaping off couches or beds etc.

My dog was not sold to me as a micro or teacup. she is small boned and actually has long legs and was supposed to be 4 pounds but really never made it past 3.4 pounds. She was the "runt" of the litter so to speak probably but smart as a whip, potty trained quickly and a wonderful dog. I have though since learned quite a bit since being on here and my next pup is coming from the wonderful Deb Sillers. It is only through my education on YT that I learned about genetic testing and reputable breeding practices.

Have you considered a rescue yorkie? I have own two yorkies one was a rescue and my current yorkie was rehomed.

I concur - you are very wise to come to YT and get first hand advice! I trust that you will heed their advice. All the very best in finding a good breeder. These dogs are so freakin' adorable My Bailey is 4 yrs. old and it is still like Christmas each and every morning!
Yorkies are very smart, but do need much attention and some work during the first year, just as a human baby does. They are smart for sure and mine catches on quite quickly to new tricks. I have taught him sign language, as well as the spoken word, when giving commands. It is quite cute to see. All the best from BC, Canada!!
