| Why won't my puppy eat dog food? Our little Abigail is doing well after a nervous start. We have had her now for two weeks. She was a little over 9 weeks old and weighed 1.6 lbs. and was the runt of the litter. She has settled in very well and she loves us and we love her. She is growing but because she was so small, I was very nervous when she would not eat the food that the breeder sent home with her--both dry and wet food. The breeder said that she had been eating well when I got her and she had been to the vet the day before and was deemed healthy. When I consulted the breeder about Abby's lack of interest in eating, she said to try eggs with cheese which she ate some but not much. I was nervous and would call the breeder and she would suggest giving her some boiled chicken and ground beef. She LOVES chicken and will eat the beef as well. BUT, I can't get her to eat her dog food and she will turn up her nose and not eat all day if you try to get her to eat the dog food. I've tried several different brands and it is becoming wasteful and expensive. I don't mind her eating human food but I do worry that she is getting the nutrition that she needs. What should I do? |

| Because you aren't using supplements, homecooked isn't balanced. You can consult a nutritionist and start cooking for her but if that isn't something you want to do, have you tried mixing chicken in with her dog food? Cottage cheese? I know people say dogs will eat when they're hungry and won't starve themselves but I think she is too young to try that theory on. What canned foods have you tried?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Well my guess would be...the human food tastes better than any dog food. You could try adding dog food to the chicken...gradually decreasing the amount of chicken. Another suggestion...wellness has canned food. All of mine...love that. One is 95% chicken.

| I have tried mixing it with chicken and also yogurt and cottage cheese and she turns away. The canned food has been Cezar's grilled chicken and filet mignon...didn't like either. I also tried another canned food that the breeder gave me but don't remember the name. |

| Thanks, I agree with you about the taste. I will try the Wellness...where can I find it? Grocery or pet store? I'm a Realtor and have to run in a minute so I'll have to wait till later to respond to any more suggestions...I do appreciate everyone's input. |

| Hi! I had the exact same problems with mine just 3 months ago. I was boiling chicken and she barely ate that. I finally got her to eat Wellness puppy in the can. I will say this realize being small like that ( mine was 1.2# and currently is 2.2#) that they dont eat but probably half to whole teaspoon in one sitting. I really recommend during this time of tryin to find what HER taste buds like to give her alittle nutrical morning/night. I had so much hypoglusmic (sp) problems because if her not eating I wouldnt want to see anyone else go thru it too. She now is eating wellness puppy dry and has a full tummy all the time!! PS wellness is at petco.. also i think they have a website were you can locate closes store, I have to order online Last edited by Miley2008; 09-19-2008 at 07:11 AM. |

If you want a wet dog food that's kinda like human food, I would try Merrick. Their Wingling caned is quite good (no I haven't tried it myself) - but there is actual veggies, potatoes and there is a whole cooked chicken wing - You do need to mash up the bone (or throw it away) - but I bet she would like this food. And the dry is pretty good too (which you can mix into the wet). You will need to go to the Merrick Dog Food website and locate a store in your area that carries it - but this is a good quality food Last edited by TLC; 09-19-2008 at 07:25 AM. | |
