| Patella Luxation (Knee) Surgery Hello everyone My little guy Brinkley is 11mo. The other day he was wet from the dew on the grass in the morning & when we came in from outside he ran through the house on the laminate floors slipping & sliding all over the place until he got to the living room on the carpeting. Well during that he injured his bah hind leg really bad. Right now the vet put him on anti inflamatories & pain med & slid it back in it's socket. If he does seem any better within about 5 days he will need x-rays & surgery. Which is this patella luxation surgery. The vet said it's common in these little guys I am sooo worried about him. This was 2 days ago. He is a bit better, but is extremely scared of the laminate flooring now & refuses to walk on it. I put him on the flood & he just stands still. He isn't completely himself that's for sure. Has any of you had to deal with this & what was the outcome & cost???

| When it's a grade 3 then yes, it should be corrected. My Zada had both her knees operated on at the same time. They were both grade 3. The cost for both was $1,600. & a bit over. The recovery time is what's going to take up most of your time. For 6 to 8 weeks they are not allowed running and jumping. They have to be either crated or put in an expen with bedding of course. Zada stayed in the expen for two solid weeks, then I would take her out back on a leash to let her walk around for about 5 minutes three times a day for a week, then 10 minutes three times a day for a couple of weeks. Recover is slow but VERY important not to rush things. Get a Vet. that has done MANY of these types of surgeries. Good luck to you and your baby.

| Try not to freak out, as he could have just had this one incident, and after the meds and rest he may fine and with some exercise those ligaments can get stronger and tighter. Alot of us are using Cosequin as a joint supplement The company name is Nuxtramax and apparently they have actual case studies of improvement from this product. So I would start him on that. Now as far as surgery goes....There are 4 grades of LP (4 being the worst, its when the patella is in a permanent out position). IMO Grade 3 and Grade 4 should have surgery to correct the luxation. LP can't get better on its own. My advice is to seek a consult with a Board Cert. Ortho Specialist. A lot of general Vets attempt to do this surgery, but honestly, it is a major surgery and you want someone with the experience, knowledge, skill and most of the proper judgement on how to repair the damage once they are inside for surgery. I can recommend a Specialist but we on Long Island, not sure where you are? |
