Adult colors?

When does a yorkie get their adult colors? At what age will I get a better idea?

Generally around one year you will get a good indication. You will probably start seeing the color 'break' on the crown of the head or along the backbone early on though.

Thanks, it seems like Niles is getting some grey on the top of his head, but I don't know if it's going to turn to the brown or not.. I'm excited to see it!

Colors can take up to 2 years of age in changing...and some yorkies can change up to 3 years of age.

Abby is nearly 8 months old and has turned gold on her head but, hasn't even gotten one lighter hair on her back. I keep hoping she'll stay just like this!

Daisy is completely gold on her head and silver on her back at 2 yrs.

Ramsey changed pretty much in her first year. Reese is almost TWO...and his is still changing....slowly. Reese's isn't even breaking along his spine...it's working it's way up from his legs and belly. He's weird. LOL

Bailey never changed. He is 4 years old and his back is still black.

Since this is about hair, I have a question. If you shave a yorkie down how long will it take for his hair to grow back? Also what special stuff do I need to get to make sure his hair grows back right? Or will it?

Well, let's see...I shaved Gracie down (using a 1 guard) in June...it was SOOOO flipping hot. Since June, her hair has grown a little over an inch. Yes, she has an extremely slow growing coat. The last time I shaved her down, it took over a year for it to be back to floor length.

She loves being shaved down...she HATES being brushed! LOL After all, it is just hair.

You can get a product (if I remember correctly) that's called Omega 3 (like I said don't quote me on the name, contact yorkierose) that helps with skin and coats.

Otherwise, just make sure that your yorkie gets a good balanced diet and they should be fine.

Cutting/shaving a yorkie down will not make the hair grow back to a correct coat. Just like humans...just because you shave your head down and previously had straight hair doesn't mean it'll come back in curls.

Thank you so much .......I didn't cut his hair, someone else did because he was not taken care of. The breeder had to fix it since he had mats in his short coat. And I want him to wear a long coat.

Kirby's hair has went through phases of differrent colors and is still changing at 16 mos. ALso I keep his hair cut in a puppy cut and it grows about 1/2 to3/4 of an inch every 5 weeks. his hair grows fast.

Calleigh who turned 1 on 5/12 is the same color as Peanut on the head. I agree with hoping the back would stay black. She is now starting to turn a little bit gray. I've heard that's a normal thing to happen. She still looks dark from a distance. She could turn purple and I wouldn't care.

I have nicknamed Odie the pup of many colors
Every time I take him to be groomed he comes out a different color. It is like having a new dog every 5-6 weeks..
Right now he is between colors, can't decide just yet.. next clipping should give us a new look ..

Thanks for all the responses! I love the traditional Yorkie colors and Niles' parents were one and the other was the grey haired... so I'm excited to see if what he's going to be.

One thing I've never mentioned and always meant to was that, Abby's back is black, but when she's in the sun or just the right light, she has kind of a reddish/burgandy cast to her coat. Has anyone else ever noticed this on their Yorkie? I've tried to get pictures of it, but the camera can't catch it.
