| Molly's Getting Spade...Help! Molly is getting spayed on the 23rd....I am nrevous and have some questions. She only weighs 4.3 pounds. Is there anything I should be concerned about? Molly is almost 8 months and all of her teeth have not fallen out yet. The vet wanted to wait as long as possible before having Molly spayed so that she could pull the extra teeth. Should I continue to wait or just do it now? The vet also wants to keep her there over night. Molly has never spent a night without me and does not like being in the crate. Should I let them keep her over night? Last question I promise...how do i keep her from running and jumping for the following week while she recovers? |

| My Jewels is about the same weight as your Molly and she was just spayed. The vet pulled her retained teeth out at that time. She didnt stay overnight but I am sure Molly will be fine. As far as jumping she just didnt right after she had surgery. Its a week after they have surgery that you have to watch them because they think they can still do everything as normal. Good luck I am sure Molly will do just fine.

| I'm sure everything will go fine for you. There have been several people who just got their little girls spayed on here very recently. They will be able to help you with what to expect I am sure. They were all very concerned and as far as I can tell, they all had positive experiences. I pray Molly will have a smooth speedy recovery! Don't forget that she will be drugged during her overnight stay which will be helpful to her. She will be safer at the vets. It will be harder on you than her. Sometimes the vet will let you take something that is her favorite for the stay (like a stuffed animal or toy). You have to keep germs in mind when choosing. Donating YT 14K Club Member | It's a very nerve racking time but hopefully, everything will go wonderfully. Get the teeth pulled at the same time that way she doesn't have to be put under a second time. Let us know how everything goes. We're here for ya!

| I would try to schedule on a day when she can have the surgery in the early morning and come home in the late afternoon. Sometimes they will bring all th surgery patients in first thing in the mornong and do several surgerieis in the morning and several in the afternoon. I would also make sure there is someone there with her if they make her stay overnight. Chai is also 8 months and not yet 3 lbs so I have been delaying her spay. I dread it. I am sure Molly will be fine. |

| I had my yorkie spayed when she was 4 1/2 months. I think she weighed almost 4 pounds. The vet explained that it was better for them to be fixed before their first heat, so I took his advice. Apparently there's a greater chance of developing cancer in their mammary glands. Basically breast cancer for dogs. She did just fine with the surgery. She had a stitch reaction but that was minor. I'm glad I had it done when she was little. She stayed overnight and was fine. The vet explained that she would sleep the whole night and wouldn't even know she was there. When I got her the next day, she was very content and very happy to see her mommy! I carried her up and down the stairs the first few days, and helped her up in chairs and things. She really did pretty good with healing. I just made sure that I didn't get her riled up or anything. Last edited by heidismom1027; 08-14-2005 at 09:38 AM. |

| Just one item to mention and that is choice of anesthetic. I don't know the official brand/medical name but basically there are two that he vets use. The regular and then the special one which costs more money and is easier on the dogs. Make sure you get the special one. Most vets offices do not have someone there overnight unless it is an actual vet hospital. I refuse to leave my dogs overnight unattended. I would insist that she be done in the early a.m. so that she can be released just before closing in the afternoon. I also insist that I be with the dog from the moment they come out of surgery. My vet isn't very happy about that because it means I am in the clinic part of the vet's office but being as how I'm the one paying and it's my dog then it's my rules. I have them place her on a bed on the floor where I can sit beside her/him while they are waking up. I made the mistake once of not being with them (my first yorkie) and she was terrified when she woke up. I would wait until she can have her teeth done at the same time. |
