Good news/ bad news - Update
 
There is good news and bad news...

The good news - 46 counts of animal abuse have been levied against Teresita Hughes (couldn't happen to a nicer person) Pet-Abuse.Com - Animal Abuse Case Details: Puppy mill - over 120 dogs - Tarpon Springs, FL (US).

The bad news - the fate of all 120 dogs still are in the balance. No decision has been rendered yet as to whether 60 of the healthiest animals need to be surrendered back to her.

Keep the letters and emails going to the FL attorney general - keep him aware that this is a hot topic for many and in the fore front of his mind. The more attention this garners, the harder it is to look the other way. Also keep the petition circulating!!!

Thanks for the update. Still praying she gets jail time, and the dogs will not be returned. No offense to anyone, but she is 69 years old. She is getting up in age to be taking care of 60 animals. She couldn't care for them before, and will not now. I have my hands full with 5, and I am a lot younger than her. :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands: :hands:

In April, Chaboudy and the Suncoast Animal League had the Pinellas Sheriff's Office accompany them to Hughes' home in East Lake after receiving complaints about the deplorable living conditions of the dogs there.

But in court last week, Parry pointed to the state law that says that those appointed to seize animals after complaints of neglect "must have the approval of the mayor of the city in which the society or association exists."

The law also says if the society or association works outside that city, the appointment must be approved by a judge and approved by the county commission.

On Jan. 29, County Judge Paul A. Levine signed a resolution to make Chaboudy a humane officer. But no such action was taken by a local mayor or the county.

All acknowledge that Chaboudy had the authority when he was with the Humane Society of Pinellas, where he worked for 20 years. But whether the authority continued once he started the Suncoast Animal League is murky.
Maybe we should be contacting the mayor.

The 18th is when Teresita appears in front of a judge on the 46 counts of animal abuse. It stinks that it is only a misdemenor (not felony) but it's a start. Even though she appears to be rather wealthy (in terms of owning 8 or 9 properties) - I hope the legal expenses cause her to give up on the dogs. They just have adjusted so nicely to normal lives, it is heartbreaking to think about them returning to an undesireable lifesytle just to appease a well hidden and never enacted clause in a document.

I haven't heard any news but today was just the arraignment for Mrs. Hughes. I am sure she plead no guilty and a trial date has been set. The only positive thing (hopefully with all fingers and toes crossed) is that until such a case is tried, the judge will not order any of the dogs returned to her. It at least buys some time for the animal league's attorneys to do what they can do to assist. The Suncoast Animal League is paying for all of their legal expenses in addition to the vet care of the dogs - so....donnations are welcome and helpful.

Thanks for this update. I've heard they have had to spend over $100,000 on vet care, and now more with attorney's fees because of a mistake on the Mayors part. I certainly wish they could file a civil suit against her, and she would have to pay for the vet care, after all, it was necessary because of her poor treatment of these animals.

I hope that's the case. $100,000 is just way to much! She should have to pay all of it and still not get her dogs back. The poor pups will just end up sick again in her hands...

:thumbup: D I T T O !!!!! I am so praying she doesn't get the dogs back. It would just be the worst thing that could happen. They are in loving foster homes and some forever homes. Leave them alone.

:mad:Recently posted on the petition, it makes me cry, to think of the abuse these animals have faced and the thought of having fur back and a happy life for once, only to POSSIBLY be put back in a cage! It is an outrage... :thumbdown I am so very upset right now just thinking about this...

It's heartbreaking to think that some of the rescued animals can't get further medical attention because the "owner" is not the one taking them. I'm glad that they are improving but it still makes me mad that these caring people have their hands tied.

I wish we could have a veterinarian do more tests to make sure they are healthy but we are not allowed to because we do not have custody of these poor puppies, Hughes still does.
